Exchanging USD in BKK

Hi All,

I will be bringing USD$100/$50 to Bangkok with a possible trip to Myanmar and was wondering if there were any particular series/serial numbers that are not accepted for exchange?

I googled every possible wording for this and the only mention was of Myanmar not accepting the AB or CB serial numbers. I was wondering if there was anything like that for Thailand.

I am making sure that all the bills I bring are crisp, not torn, etc. . . In years past, I just used my ATM card but I want to bring some cash just in case.

Thanks for any information.

In general, for exchange, you want the newest-type bills and they should be in good shape. Only Burma/Myanmar is really picky about your bills.

Forget the $50's take only $100 bills . New, no marks or tears and exchange them at the airport exchange window.

The best exchange rate I've found for US $ (100s) is at VASU on Sukhumvit at about soi 7/9a. They are typically giving .2 to .4 or higher rate than the walk-up exchange places in the city.

If you need to exchange at the airport, (sorry Bill) only get enough Baht to last you a few days. Their exchange rate is not as good as VASU or other places you will find in the city.

I agree with Bill though, take $100s as they will get you the best rate. You want the new style (large face) that are clean and crisp, no writing, no tears, and not too worn.

ATM's are OK in case of emergency. But they charge a fee each time, and the rates are lower than you get for cash.

If the banks are giving you 30, the ATM's end up giving you 27-28 after fees.

Brad, last trip I did a direct comparison by exchanging dollars and getting money from an ATM the same day. I have an account that refunds the ATM charge to me. The exchange rate I received from the ATM was slightly better than the exchange rate I received exchanging US$100 bill. The difference, however, was small.

My local AEON ATM (Big C) always beats all posted rates(even Super Rich) and is fee free.
