Darren -

We used one last year that someone referred us to. It was about $50-60.

You shouldn't spend more than that.

Also, if you're interested in my trip report, I could email it to you. It's way to many pages to post here. We spent 10 days in BKK last November and loved it so much we're going back again this year.
<BR

Darren,
I have just returned from Bangkok. On my last day there I was lucky enough to meet a taxi driver who spoke English - that I could understood. I felt completely safe with him and he was extremely trustworthy - so much so that I obtained his name, address and phone number and when my husband and I return in December we are going to use him exclusively to take us everywhere. I paid him about $60 for the day and his assistance was invaluable. If you want to contact him I will be happy to give you his details.

$60 is way too much. We took a songthaew and driver for the day in Pattaya back in July and gave him B600 plus a B100 tip (= $18), and he was more than happy with the deal. He took us on a tour of about 200km, visiting three different sites, and waiting for us each time. In Chiang Mai we did the same thing, paying around $10 for a morning tour.

For a taxi and driver for the day in BKK I would not pay more than $30. Negotiate first, being careful to explain exactly what you want to do and how long a tour you want, and do not give in to pleas for more than the agreed amount when the tour is over. You must of course stick to the itinerary. Naturally, if you get the hotel to arrange all this you will get stuck with a bill for $60. My scheme assumes your own private negotiation with a driver.

I am afraid your $30 taxi driver probably worked the day for nothing. Most taxi drivers must pay 600 per shift for their car and approximately 150 Baht per day to police. Add to that gas and one can see that the taxi driver earned almost nothing for himself. While prices in Thailand should be relatively inexpensive one would hope the objective is not to drive the bargain to the point the poor fellow looses money.

Most of you are the overpaying Americans we've all heard and read about. You raise the rates for the rest of us. The stanard rate per day (6 or 7 AM to 12 PM)(NOT TAXIS) for a driver and car is 1200 Baht in Bangkok and 1400B to 1800B for longer up-country trips (Kanchaburi or Ayautta). I use two drivers on a continous basis (both have big Toyato nice airconditined cars)
Dechar, CEL: 01-993-5052 and NOI, CEL:
01-483-9541. Both speak Good English and know about everythingand anything. Tell them that 'Khon' Roger told you to contact them. Have fun...ROGER
