Dinner spots for solo traveller
Hi all, looking for some recommendations for cheap to mid-range restaurants around the CBD that are good for solo diners. I'm staying at Ibis on Bencoolen, so close by options would be good to know, as well as further afield. I like all cuisines. Thanks in advance!

I've never had a problem eating anywhere as a solo diner in Singapore. I just got back again from there 3 days ago, while on my 6-week, Asia vacation, and stayed in the Central Business District (CBD), for those who don't know what CBD stands for. There's plenty of varied food in the different malls.
Paris Baguette is always busy on the first level of Wisma Mall on Orchard Blvd. I drop in there quite a bit as they have really good sandwiches, salads, and baked goods. I especially like the crab-salad sandwiches, lentil salad, and blueberry cake. I got all three for S$15.50 and it was a very filling meal.
Plus, there are a lot of food courts in the malls, like in the basement of Tang department store, where I go for quick, Nonya food, from time to time. In that food court, there are all different types of food. Plus, in the evening there's Newton Circus Hawker stands and of course plenty other Hawker-type places around town.
For a splurge, there's Straits Kitchen inside of the Grand Hyatt on Scotts Rd, right off of Orchard Blvd. It's a good place to go on a weekend. I was just there last Sunday and had some really good dishes. They have food stations that represent different countries in the region (Malaysia/Singapore/Indonesia), plus India. The cost for one person came to S$61.20 (tax included). I keep a detailed travel journal and record prices of everything so that I can refer back to it. I had put it on my list for many years, but just never got around to eating there when I decided to just do it this time and was glad that I did. When I get back next year, I'll go again for one meal.
As for staying at Ibis on Bencoolen, I can't remember where that is, off the top of my head, and am too tired and jet lagged to look it up on a map although I know that I've been on Bencoolen before, but just can't remember exactly where it is.

Chijmes, a collection of restaurants, cafes and bars, is about a ten minute walk from the Ibis. I haven't been there recently so can't recommend a specific restaurant, but there are lots of choices and it's a pleasant, lively area.

A little further (about 10 minutes by MTR) and look at Moosehead Kitchen and Burnt Ends. Maybe more upscale than what you're looking for but very good food.

I've eaten at Lei Garden in Chijmes. It's been there for a very long time. Also Indochina has now moved into Chimes. I used to eat at the one on Club Street and also two other locations although at least 2 of the old locations have closed. I liked the food there.
Also in Raffles City Mall, at the City Hall MRT (subway station), there are a lot of places to eat. I've been eating in there for 19 years. The food places are on the lower level and there's also a grocery store in there if you need to pick up some snacks, beverages, sushi, sandwiches, and the like.

We really liked Chijmes -- had drinks at a few places and ate dinner at Coriander Leaf (highly recommended, good food, friendly service and amazing selection of plum wines).
We were just in Singapore for two weeks (I know that violates Asia forum protocol...) and had a lot of good meals in various parts of town. We did only one hawker center and while they're great, we were more in the mood for restaurants.

LMAO! I know....as one should not spend more than a couple of days in Singapore. I love spending time in Singapore and have spent up to 2 weeks there and never regretted it. I just finished my bookings for my 2017/2018 Asia trip and have again booked three different stop offs in Singapore; 1 night upon arrival, a 1-week stay some weeks later, and then after a week after that stay, 3 more nights before flying home. I can't wait to eat my way through Singapore again. WeisserTee, I'm going to look up Coriander Leaf right now and bookmark it. Smiles.
