Destinations like Ubud or Seminyak in Bali?

Hi guys! My husband and I went to Bali 2 years ago for our honeymoon and absolutely ADORED it. We're planning another trip to SE Asia in December and I'd love to go somewhere "like" Bali but not Bali again. We would like to stay in nice hotels (that don't break the bank, like Bali didn't), possibly have our own pool, nice beach and good food. We're big foodies and health nuts so Bali was perfect for us in terms of cuisine.

So far I am thinking maybe Ko Samui, Koh Lanta, Siem Reap (I know it's not luxury but I've always wanted to see Angkor Watt), Luang Prabang in Laos. What do you guys think? I have been to Thailand 5 years ago but it was more of a backpacker trip and I am definitely looking for more luxury this time.

We went to Ubud (stayed at Komaneka & Chedi), Nusa Lembongan, Seminyak (we loved the food and vibe here) and Sanur (also loved the vibe).

Consider going back to Bali if that's what you want. Having visited quite a few places in SE Asia, I think I can safely say it's unique. On the other hand, if what you want is a great new experience, the options are endless.

Since you've expressed an emphasis on food, start there. What kind of SE Asian food do you like best. If you aren't sure, get out there and find out. My personal favorite places, though I'd never call myself a "foodie" (I just eat whatever's where I happen to find myself for the most part), are often an expression of the food I enjoy most.

I once got sick in one country and the cure was heading straight for Thailand for the fresh ingredients and how I loved it. It worked.

Bali is pretty unique in terms of culture. But comparing to Seminyak... if I had to pick a place that's fairly upscale tourist ready with the selection of high end restaurants and hotels, the boutique shops and spas, I'd probably say Luang Prabang. Of course, it's a lot different too as you're out walking around.

If you are looking for beach, a Thai beach would likely be your best bet. Avoid the holiday period, Christmas - New Years, as prices for hotels will double or more. In December, you would want to be on the Andaman Sea side of Thailand: Phuket, Koh Lanta, Ko Lak etc. You could easily combine Phuket and Siem Reap for a vacations with both beach/relaxation and cultural experiences. You could also consider Langkawi for beach and combine it with Georgetown, Penang. If food is of interest to you, Georgetown is famed for it's hawker food. Georgetown is a UNESCO world Heritage site, a charming small city with lots to see snd do.

Happy Planning!
