Dengue Outbreak in Thailand?

Thai experts - Would appreciate an update on the dengue outbreak. We're considering a last minute family trip in mid August to BKK and Chiang Rai. Have heard there is an unusually high rate of dengue this year and we don't want to be paranoid the whole time we're traveling. If we go, we'll be staying in relatively upscale accomodations, but do want to venture out for elephant rides, floating markets, etc.

Dengue is spread by mosquitos, a variety that tends to breed in cities and is active (and bites) during the day. The only prevention is to prevent mosquito bites. Use a repellant with 25-50% deet, re-apply as needed. Wear long sleeves and long pants wherever practical.

There are frequent outbreaks of Dengue but it's nothing to worry about. Use plenty of deet, wear long sleeves and pants and socks when on or near water or any other place mosquitos may be. I know it sounds horible to wear such attire in such a hot climate but buy tops and pants that are very light fabrics and which breathe and you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks, Kathie. We travel often to tropical places and know the drill re: DEET and buzzaway clothing. We were concerned because reports about this particular outbreak say it is way more severe than usual and will get worse in the rainy season. Would love to hear from someone who is in BKK now.
