Can someone help me remember the name of the Zen temple where you go to part of the service and write things and have to get permission to go in advance? Magical gardens, well worth the effort?
I agree--trade Osaka for more time in Kyoto...and be forewarned that Kyoto's beauty is not like Paris or Venice, compact and symmetrical. It is a big city with much not beautiful----and one of the most wonderful places I have ever been.
Don't miss the Philosopher's Path--walk by canal with several temples on the way.

Yes, Saiho-ji, also called Kokedera - I was there this spring - it was quite interesting - writing the sutra and then walking around the garden - I was one of the last to finish so many people had already left and it was really lovely. That said, it is a bit of a hassle to reserve - I was in Kyoto for a few weeks so it was easy to send the reservation request and I wasn't fussy about going on a certain day. It is also quite a ways to walk from the station although there are buses but I think they are not too frequent. Not for a short first visit that's for sure....
