October, November, March and April.
Starting 2008, China is canceling the May and October "Golden Week" holidays. The idea is to let people off at various times over the year instead of having 1.3 billion people jamming the train stations during those two weeks (and Chinese New Year, which they can't cancel).
I don't know how well that may work, so avoid first week of October still.
