Chiang Mai vs. Chiang Rai and Golden Triangle
Hi,
Which do you recommend to go?
1. Chiang Mai and the surrounding area.
or
2. Chiang Rai and Golden Triangle?
I have been in both places -- Chiang Mai (YCV and other hotels), Golden Triangle (Anantara), and prefer Chiang Mai.
Chiang Rai and Golden Triangle -- not much to do and see besides enjoying to stay at luxury hotels. For me, two days are enough.
Chiang Mai and surrounding area -- a lot of activities, choices of restaurants, and sights to see. Chiang Mai is the center of Northern Thailand culture (Lana) which we do not see much in Chiang Rai and Golden Triangle area. There are many many tuk tuks available to go anywhere in the city so that transportation is not inconvenient at all. Sunday Market in the old town has incredible atmosphere with music and scenery. I love to go there before it is crowded.
Of course, Chiang Mai is a touristy place, but there are reasons why it is so popular.
