Chiang Mai Transportation

Is it necessary to have a guide to get around Chiang Mai and/or visit Doi Suthep? When traveling I usually get around independently, but would reconsider if it's especially difficult or having a guide would greatly enhance the experience.

It does sound that a guide is necessary for visiting Doi Inthanon Natl Park - I'm assuming because of the distance from CM?

You will not need a guide to get around Chiang Mai or to get to Doi Suthep. It is easy to do on your own.

I just spent 6 nights in Chiang Mai during my 5 week solo trip. I love that city! I know that Kathie on this forum also loves Chiang Mai and returns again and again.

If you have time you might also want to consider spending a few nights up in Chiang Dao, an hour or so north of Chiang Mai. It is beautiful up there.

I am not sure about Doi Inthanon so maybe someone else can answer that for you.

You will need a driver, but not a guide. I was just back in CM after 20 years. If you look at my trip report, posted at the end of November, I have a driver in CM who I highly recomend. The post gives his name and call phone number as well as his rates. For around town, her charges 250 baht per hour. For places farther away like Doi Suthep, it's a flat fee, 800 baht. SOmehwere I also have an email address for him. I'll try to find it.

Sorry Kathie. I was thinking it was you who had returned to Chiang Mai again and again. I wish I could recall who it was!

Cheers!

Thank you eurotraveller and Kathie!

Eurotraveller - Chiang Dao does look beautiful...I'm afraid we won't have enough time to make it there this time, but I'm putting it in my notes in case we do. (or for hopefully a return trip someday!)

Kathie - I have spent hours pouring over your posts and trip reports (among others) to help pull together our itinerary. What indispensible inside scoop! I just reread your report to find the driver you recommended. I will take his number with me, but if you do come across his email that would be fantastic.

Thanks!
Julia
