I had trouble finding it, but it does in fact exist. Try www.riverviewlodgch.com. If that doesn't work, maybe Penny will see the post and direct you to it - she's the only who got me there.

We have reservations there in a few weeks - I'll post a report when we return.

found the site and the River View looks exactly like what i had in mind. Thanks for your help Meg and Penelope and if you could fill me in on your stay in Chaing Mai Meg I'd appreciate it. Pushing my luck but do you know of a similar place in Bangkok where the hotel is more traditional. Thanks again.

Re: traditional hotel in Bangkok. I have stayed at a number of hotels in that city, including the Oriental (several times for five nights each; it is overrated, in my opinion), but really do not know of one that is comparable to the River View Inn. I now stay always at the Bangkok Christian Guest House, not because it is inexpensive ($25 for a single, with breakfast), but because of its location, its oasis-like grounds (no swimming pool, though), and, especially, because of the fascinating guests, particularly people who live and work in SE Asia in a multitude of selfless occupations (anti-prostitution and anti-trafficking in women, AIDS research, leperosy control, and such). Conversation with them more than compensates for the plain accommodations and basic breakfast (there are lots of places nearby for a mid-morning snack). P
