Can you go overland (not driving!) from Kathmandu -- Lhasa -- Beijing?
Hi,
I am going to Nepal in December. After Nepal I want to go overland to Lhasa and then catch the train from Lhasa to Beijing. Is this do-able? I know I can catch trains from Lhasa to Beijing but Lonely Planet says that there are no trains from Kathmandu to Lhasa. Are there other ways to do this? I will be alone and (am a young female) so do not want to hire a driver or car.
Thanks!

Do check out Thorntree, as there is lots of talk about Kathmandu to Lhasa. As you probably know, the visa process has been - uh - disrupted by the Olympics and China's fear of protestors. People are anticipating that thing will return to normal eventually.

The elevation from Kathmandu to Lhasa won't allow any railway to be built the whole way.
There's a road there and stretches of it are mountain hugging, narrow and unpaved - one of the most exciting roads i've ever travelled on.
