Can one take Chinese Yuan into China?

I read somewhere that it is illegal to take Chinese currency into China. I would like take a small amount with me, to cover charges getting to the hotel, etc. I will be flying into Shanghai. Are there ATM's at the airport. Also any advice on getting to the hotel downtown from the new airport in Pudong?Thank you.

Pat - I don't think Chinese yuan is available outside of China, so I don't think you can take any in with you. I'm not sure about ATM's at the airports but certainly they will have a change bureau where you can get some upon arrival. Our airport transfer was prearranged for us, so i don't have any advice on getting to your hotel. I hope you have a great trip.
I think the limit for RMB in or out of China is 6000 RMB, which is just over $700 US.

Absolutely take a taxi from the Pudong Airport to your hotel. I think it may cost as much as RMB 230 (US $25), but it will be worth it for the convenience.

There are ATM's at the airport, and in Shanghai they are *relatively* plentiful (it seems like there are 10 times more than in Beijing). Most banks have a 24 hour ATM machine that accepts Visa, Cirrus, Plus & other bank networks.

Thank you for the information. Thomas Cook does exchange chinese Yuan. I will take enough to cover the first day or so. Andrea, is it easy to find a taxi at the airport and not worry about being greatly overcharged. Thanks

We spent almost a month in China in Oct.-Nov. My husband, always worried about money, purchased the yuan from American Express. As soon as we reached China we realized our mistake for China has the same exchange for the American dollar everywhere. The rate was much better in China and by keeping your exchange receipt you can cash in your money at the same exchange when you leave. Every hotel had an exchange bureau.
