If you're looking at a mid range hotel with a pool and good restaurant, try the Bopha-Angkor. A single is about $50US a night. Spotlessly clean, centrally located, quiet romantic and good restaurant. It's on the road to the airport, which is not an ideal place to stay...not much around except other hotels, many of which cater to package tours. You will need a tuk tuk/transport to get to the market area...when they say 5 minutes, they mean driving.
