Annhig - Just to say, who could forget your description of the rain soaked family holiday in Iceland culminating in the Bible thumping, tent rental?!! It has to be a Fodor's classic.

Reading all the travel mags it would seem that you will have Egypt to yourself, with all the travel advisories etc.
UK operators are discounting like mad their AI beach breaks.
We loved our trips to Egypt with memories like drifting past Elephant Island at Aswan still fresh in our minds.
Our first visit was on Concorde (now there is a one up!) and we returned a further 3 times including two Nile cruises, the latter with A&K. It is on our "return" list-only just over 5 hours away but our next trips are to Myanmar (x2),Istanbul/Gallipoli and Oman/UAE so it will have to wait.
Taking early retirement is such a joy......

Just to say I've posted some photos from Kakku which we found underwhelming, perhaps because I wasn't feeling great.
But I should be posting on Inle and Mrauk U in the next little while.

PS -- Thanks for referencing annhig's TR on Iceland -- you whetted my curiosity with your description of her report, and I promptly spent several hours laughing (almost to tears!) reading it! Definitely a must read!

Naah, you haven't, annhig -- but I'll add some comments on your report so this doesn't become the Europe-lite forum! And bring it back to the top so others can have some fun, too.

Well, we've made it to Egypt and I'm sitting at the Mena House looking at the pyramids. How fabulous, the look just like the did when I spent a month here with my parents in 1980, pity I don't look the same. Anyway to get back to Burma I wanted to let you all know I've added a few more blog posts and have lots scheduled while I'm away.

We loved Mrauk U and it was the area that we found the most interesting in Burma. The combination of history and geography is wonderful and I highly recommend it. Here. Is the first of the Mrauk U posts and one on Sittwe where we stopped overnight.

I've also posted on Inle lake were we bumped into Yestravel and Gotravel

http://somuchmoretosee.blogspot.com/...inle-lake.html

The lake was lovely but if I did it again I would stay longer, skip Kakku and stay on the water. I highly recommend our guide T2 who was great fun.

Hope you enjoy the photos!

Problem with Egypt is that the situation can change in an instant.

Mubarak been cleared [of whatever it is] the other day hasn't exactly gone down well.

If you veer too far off the beaten track, then you could be left slightly stranded if anything hits the fan.

Just got back from a cruise to the Caribbean, with visits to Antigua, St Maarten, Tortola, St Kitts, Dominica, and Barbados. I look like a local at the moment.

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed Mrauk U so much - so did we. I'm so saddened by the conflict in the area and the fate of the Rohinga.

We stayed on the lake at Inle, at the Inle Lake View Resort and just loved it. Your photos brought back a lovely surge of memories!

Oh, and enjoy Egypt - how can you not? I have a lovely photo of a view of the pyramids from the dining room (through the beaded curtains) at the Mena House that distills my memories of that part of the trip.

welltraveledbrit-We were in Myanmar several years ago before it became the "hot tourist destination" it is today. I am in agreement with your sentiments regarding staying on the lake. We did and it definitely added to our experience. We also thought MU was the highlight of our trip. There was no fighting in the area when we were there. Outwardly, it was peaceful, relaxing and very scenic.
Have a wonderful time in Egypt. We went about 6 years ago when things were politically more stable than they are presently. I'm not sure I would go today, but we sure had a wonderful time when we were there.

Wonderful photos, once again! I'm so enjoying following along on your trip -- you have an interesting take on the region and I especially like reading about the less-popular places that you've visited.

Another Mrauk U post on the blog
http://somuchmoretosee.blogspot.com/...diversity.html

The situation for the Rohinga is desperate and you see the Red Cross and MSF vans in town..

Shelley's - glad this resonates with your experience.
Kathie, we had breakfast looking at the pyramids through that beaded curtain a few days should and I thought of you!
Yestravel provolone and annhig -glad you are traveling along!

We leave Cairo tomorrow and are loving our trip, I'm so happy we have another 12 days in the south. It's the perfect antidote to the crowds in Burma! Lancaster Lad - I agree things can "turn on a dime" as they say in the US but right now we feel very safe despite localized protests and nothing is currently targeted at tourists. Everyone has made us very welcome and this afternoon we had five magical minutes in the Tutenkhamun room at the museum with only the guard for company.

" five magical minutes in the Tutenkhamun room at the museum with only the guard for company"
Bad politics has its compensation-on our visit many moons ago we were rushed through, tangled up with Greek & Italian coach parties (not a quiet mix) but managed a quick peek at the golden death mask.
Do enjoy your trip down South to Luxor & Aswan

Just picked up our Malarone for our Myanmar trip
