BKK-Yangon

this is the second time i am posting this. what happened to the first one?
We are contemplating flying over to Yangon from Bangkok. Is there an Asian orbitz website? How much is the round trip and where can i find info on that? Which guidebook would you recommend on Myanmar? I 've been to BKK but not Myanmar and I know nothing about the place except some great reviews in this forum. Are there websites with useful info? do I need a visa? I am looking into the asian pass with Cathy Pacific from here to Asia. I have read all the fine prints twice. If anyone out there has bad experience with the asian pass please let me know.
thanks.

www.bangkoktickets.com tends too show some good consolidated tickets. WHEN IT WORKS> or you can email OLVAVI. blue and white. seatous or any of the many consolidators. with web sites.

ticks tend too go for about 5000-8000 baht the 8000 baht ones usually are packages including three star hotels and tranfers.

Your previous post is still here. Three people responded to it. You can find it quickly by searching on one of the key words in your title (such as Yangon) or by clicking on your name. Clicking on your name will bring up all of your posts.

Am planning a trip to Myanmar myself. We fly from Dubai on Thai, and on to Yangon. The integrated ticket Dxb-Bkk-Rgn is about the same price as Dxb-Bkk. So, I get Bkk-Rgn-Bkk more or less free.
I am told by my travel agent that you can get the visa on the spot, upon arrival. My travel agent arranges asked me for ppt number etc, so he could introduce the visa request ahead, in order to speed up procedure when we arrive. Apparently a visa costs about 25 usd. That is what my travel agent tells me.
I am using Lonely Planet for prep of the trip. Usually one comes out well with LP, I suppose it will be the same for Myanmar.
I am still preparing for the trip, so I can only pass on what I am told by the travel agent. Hope it's right. If anybody knows differently, I am interested to hear that, me as well.

unless something has changed recently you CANNOT GET your visa upon arrival in yangon...it is a mad house there by the way and you would not want to do this even if you could...

Well, I do not know whether you can go through the full procedure by mail. What I know is this
- travel agent sent me the forms over the net
- I filled them out and sent them back to the agent over the net
- he follows up with Immigration and has the application file opened and handled
- I have to bring a print-out of the application files, stick a picture to it and hand everything over upon arrival
- apparently it goes quite quickly then, at the counter in the airport.
Again, this is what I am being told, and what also happened when an Italian friend of mine went to Myanmar in October 03.
In other words, it seems to work, but it is not quite a fully computerised arrangement they are having.
By the way. how can you otherwise handle the issue? There are so few Myanmar embassies around, you got to be really lucky to have one within 1500 km from where you live.

Bob,
I haven't applied for the visa yet either. We aren't going until Jan, 2005, so it's still too soon.

jane...as i said it think...i applied for mine about 90 days before i was going by sending my passport to the embassy in washington and it was returned in about 2 weeks...very satisfactory...

i do know that when we arrived in yangon it was alsmost chaos...there are several desks you have to go to...that was 2 years ago when you still had to exchange $300 for funny money...that is gone now i understand....after this is where the chaos really starts as people grab your bags off the luggage converyor and take them to your taxi, etc in exchange for a tip...very unnerving really...worse than egypt where i thought it completely out of control

We applied on-line in March 2004 and nothing happened. Do yourself a favour and apply through the normal channels. We used Footprint guidebook & Lonely Planet's SE Asia on a Shoestring. Myanmar is a mainly rural country-so under-developed and pretty basic but wonderful to experience. You can fly with several airlines for about 7,300 baht rtn (US185) from BKK. Check out www.saveflights.com-have a great trip.
