BKK GTG 4 Jan?

Are any of you planning on being in BKK on the 4th Jan?
Carol Simpson and her DH, and I, Sue and my DH are planning on a GTG and wonder if any Asia Talk Fodorites might be in town and up for meeting for either drinks or a buffet dinner/lunch.

We leave here (Chicago) on Jan 1st. and will be checking to see if any others are interested. I'll let Carol pick the place and time that will suit her best. Perhaps at the Pickled Liver?

Hi Sue!
One correction... DH is here, yes, but it's DS who is a fodorite and will hopefully be joining us at the GTG. DH is a bit of a hermit, as far as meeting my internet friends.

Anyway, Pickled Liver would be a great idea! Where is it that you are staying? I will try to give directions... And I am sure that Maeng would love to meet another one of my friends!

I will ask DS about the time. He often plays pool on Sunday afternoons (just like he and DH will do today)... but I would think that later in the afternoon would be better than earlier.

We'll be watching this thread to see if anyone else pops up!

I was supposed to be in Brunei from the 2nd until the 4th, but it still hasn't been confirmed. If that trip gets canceled or depending on the timing, I can try to make it.

That's great, Michael. Hope you can join us. Have you met Maeng yet?

I have not met the legendary Ms Maeng, which is reason enough to try and make it. Hopefully, I'll know tomorrow if the trip to Brueni is on or not.

Not to put a damper on going to the Pickled Liver for our little GTG, but I was just there tonight. Sunday night is rather crazy with soccer games playing on all the big screen TVs. There was shouting and high-five(ing) so not as quiet as it is some other evenings. Maybe a quieter place would be better for conversation.

I too hope that Michael can make it. Agree about noisy soccer games not being the best for visiting, so would ask that Carol suggest another choice of venue. Or, if Michael can make it, how about one of his special places?
You asked, we will be at the Riverside Marriott 3-11th Jan.

Anyone else available for a GTG?

Bob, wish you and K were here!

I asked Maeng about next Sunday. She said we should plan on coming and sitting outside instead of inside with the soccer watchers.
The smokers go outside to light up, but it is a big enough area that it probably would not be a bother...

Anyone with another suggestion?

Looks like my trip to Brunei is off until later in January, so I guess I'll be there. Outside should be okay, but I'm open to alternatives.

Glad you can make it Michael. That will be five of us so far. Plus we will meet Maeng.
Pickled Liver, outside is fine.
Need address, directions (from closest train stop) and time to meet.
Sunday 4th January, Pickled Liver,
Is anyone else in BKK then?

I'd like to suggest meeting about 4:00 in the afternoon at Pickled Liver. Outside should be fine. I'm not sure how many of the soccer fans will be on hand at that time, but they should all be inside.

I asked Maeng what time they set up the outside seating on Sundays (normally it is around 5pm on weekdays) and she said they open up at 2. There is car/vehicle traffic on this part of soi 11 on weekdays but it is not allowed on Sundays.

Brad may be in a pool tournament on Sunday. You never can tell... And DH will be packing to leave for Zurich in the late evening. I'd rather meet in the afternoon and not commit to a dinner so that I'm helping DH gather all of his stuff in the apartment (I don't want to carry his stuff home... lol)

Either that, or meet at one of the Sunday brunch locations like we did the last time. Is there a brunch at the Marriott?? I've not yet taken the shuttle down the river, so would be open to doing that...

Early is good for me as well. It's a long commute from the 'burbs where I live. The appetizers at PL sound great, so I'd vote for that over another buffet.

I would also prefer the PL to a lavish brunch buffet.
This time tomorrow, we will be on our way!!!!
So please give address and directions to the PL and we'll be there on the 4th at 4:00PM

If you could give directions asap I would be grateful as after today, we will not have regular internet.

If you need to call us, we begin our Marriott stay after noon on the 3rd.

See you at the Pickled Liver on Sunday!

Great Michael,
Will see you soon.... This was fine, just as we were unplugging the computer before leaving on our journey. See you around 4:00PM on Sunday.
Sue and Vince
Oh and, Happy New Year

Happy New Year from Pattaya! I found a cheap internet place not far from the Marriott. It's very expensive to go on line using my baby laptop at the Marriott.

I'll be at PL at 4 on Sunday. It will be great to meet more fodorites! We'll see if DS can make it. He may be in a tournament, but could be knocked out early... lol

As a newbie to this forum, I really wish I could make it to this get together! I arrive in Bangkok for the first time on January 9th at night, so I won't be able to make it. I met up with rhkkmk and k for dinner this week for a delightful thai meal and travel discussion. I hope to make get togethers in the future!
