Isis
I was going to suggest a separate thread for this announcement! Looks like you were reading my mind. Do have a great time in BKK at the GTG.
I'll be there in spirit. (I'll be just about on my way to SanJuan Puerto Rico for some sight seeing and a 7-day cruise)

Hi Isis. Great idea to BYO wine & pay the very reasonable corkage fee.
In Thredbo, Australia's best known ski resort, and at Christmas 2001, we ate the most amazing twice cooked duck from Victoria & BYO'd a bottle of pinot from Tasmania. (Crowne Princess Mary of Denmark territory). Some of the best pinot available here, comes from Tasmania and we also took a bottle of our world famous Grange 1980. The Thredbo Alpine Hotel charged us $A20 per bottle to bring our own and we thought it was a bargain price for corkage.
I wonder if Faces would cellar our wine for us? I 'll email them. We arrive BKK Nov 30 and would love to bring a fine bottle of Aussie red with us, but I don't want to lug it all the way to Sri Lanka & back. Pity we can carry only one bottle. The legal drugs I'm taking weigh the same as a bottle of wine! A drug for every occasion.
Wine is so cheap (apologies Craig!) here. e.g. a good bottle of cab sauv, shiraz or a merlot blend which compares favourably to a similar quality bottle in, say, France, would retail for around $A30 here now and around 40 Euros in Paris. There's been a glut of quality grapes & therefore a glut of quality wine here & first rate stuff is available for AUD15-30 a bottle. Anyways, I'll email them.
It's a great idea to BYO. We do it here often. Some would say that's cheap. I think it's common sense.
Thanks for the re-cap Isis. All the best.

Sorry I can't be there to join in the fun - will have to wait until February. Even I would agree that wine is ridiculously expensive in Thailand (and in most places in Asia). But more importantly, most wines do not go with Asian spicey food anyway. There are some exceptions of course but I generally stick to beer, which as you know, is relatively "cheap".

Here's an excerpt from Divediva and her daughter on directions to the Face

my daughter and i had dinner at the thai restaurant Face on Thursday nite. we were staying at the asia hotel so it very easy to get on the BTS sukhumvit line and get off
at Thong Lo station. exit at exit 4...walk down the stairs to the street and turn right to go under the skytrain stairs and you will be on soi 38. there are no signs that say soi 38 but many buildings have a big 38 painted above their business signs.
turn left...walk about 10 minutes past small businesses, large residential estates...down a small street and look for the FACE logo and tiki torches...
what a beautiful place...it was sprinkling rain when we arrived...and we were greeted with an umbrella. there are many stairs with no hand rails and it was slippery. we did not make reservations but arrived early 6:30pm and there were only 2 other couples.
the architecture is northern thai lanna...it tooks like it could house a temple ...all teak...hand carved sculptures and the womens bathroom was quite interesting.
we ordered massaman curry, pineapple fried rice, phat thai, an appetizer of leaves, lime, coconut, ginger, peanuts, onions, chilis and sweet and sour paste...absolutely beautiful presentation and the food was fantastic. total with 2 rounds of sprite $1400 bht plus tip.

I am Divediva's daughter, and I have to make one little correction. The walk to face is only about 3 to 5 minutes, very easy to get back and forth from the skytrain station. (almost 5 months pregnant and the walk was cake!)"

Hey rizzuto, I'm not necessarily staying for dinner. I thought we'd see how the drinks go first. Is this OK with you, Isis. I'd rather not be committed to dinner. For me, personally, I'd like to remain flexible about where we eat. I'm bringing wine because I prefer to drink wine rather than spirits.
