Nest year two of us are hoping to buy motorbikes in either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, bike to the other one (undecided on route yet) and sell the bikes on. I was wondering whether anyone had any experience of this? It is at all possible?

All I did was google but you're welcome Mike. Expecting a full report though..

There is a website called the New Hanoian where under classified motorbikes are listed for sale. This site is in Hanoi, there is also a motorbike group here in Hanoi too that often ride up to the border of china and then all over the surrounding area of Hanoi, most of them ride Minsk's. My hubby rents a dirt bike for $8.00 a day, cause he already has two bikes already and his wife won't allow him to buy a third!If you want more info you can email me at [email protected] I forgot to mention I live in Hanoi

You can generally buy a Minsk in either city and sell when you arrive at the other end. Timing, however, might be another issue. You can buy a Minsk (125cc) for $300-$500 US. They are simple bikes and can be repaired just about anywhere in the country. Renting a bike is also an option but only if you plan to return it where you rented it.

Having said that and having made four bike trips around the country let me warn you. Riding in Vietnam is very dangerous. Traffic in the city is so chaotic it will amaze you. Simply crossing the street on foot is an adventure until you get the hang of it.

Riding in the country side is where many riders run into trouble. They get too sure of themselves and relax just as a truck or bus rounds a corner on your side of the road. Also passing through small villages is tricky as live stock will dart out in front you without warning. Water buffalo can also take you out if you are not careful.

Seeing Vietnam by bike is the best way to see and experience the country but please do be careful.
