best way for cheap air fare?
What sources/sites/agents does everyone use for the cheapest airfare?
We are from San Francisco, planning on going to bangkok and hong kong and am not getting anything cheaper than $1200/ per person for November.
I know of the Cathay Pacific air pass but that's the only thing. Are there websites I don't know about?

Stephanie -

Is it $1,200 for both? If so, that's pretty close. I just checked ual.com and they had a flight to BKK from San Fran. for about $795. Thai Airways had a flight from BKK to HK for $265. So you'd be looking at both for $1,060.

Best thing to do is just keep checking all the sites (lowestfare.com - travelocity.com - expedia.com) as well as various airlines and something will pop up.

We fly out of LAX and the price to BKK is usually around $1,000 - $1,200 but we always end up getting it for $650 or so. We just keep checking and it usually takes us a month or two until the right deal pops up.

We are also going to BKK in November and have just started looking for deals. The best I've found so far from LAX was Thai for $709. It should get lower though. We're going to wait about a month and see what else pops up.

Good Luck.

Lynn
<BR

You shuld check out the tour wholesalers ... they have the best air deals in the market, but they are not allowed to sell air by itself ... need to also buy some tour components (e.g. hotel for a couple of nights, gorund transportation to / form airport).

What tour wholesales are there? If anyone could provide names, numbers or websites, that would be great!

The $1200 fare I got was per person! on Cathay Pacific from SFO to BKK and then BKK to HKG and finally back to SFO. Is it too early to be looking for november? Lynn, how many months before do you buy in advance of your trip?

Stephanie ... USTOA has a list of major tour wholesalers at ustoa.com. Pacific Delight Tours is the largest wholesaler form North America to Asia ... for example, Lynn commented above that she found airfare for $709 on Thai from LAX to BKK. Pacific Delight offers a tour called Bangkok Sojourn on United Airlines from San Francisco to BKK which also includes 6 nights in a superior first class hotel, 5 breakfasts, and sightseeing for $770 from Nov 15 thru Dec 19th per person assuming 2 people share the same hotel room. The url is http://www.pacificdelighttours.com/u...kokSojourn.htm. So for $60 more, you get a whole lot.

Try: http://thaifly.com/indexusa.shtml

I've never used them, but when I checked their website, I was quoted an airfare even cheaper than the $727 I got from ORD to BKK in June, which is really good for June. Just a suggestion.

I suggest to monitor the airfare using personal page on websites like yahoo.com, travelocity.com etc... Just enter your destinations (to/from), it will give you the cheapest available on the market. Sometime you have to buy the ticket with the agency to get the published fare. Sometimes you don't have to. Call the airline offering the fare. Most of the time, you can get directly from them, or from a local travel agency.

Stephanie -

For a trip in November, we usually start looking at the end of May and by the end of June we are checking the fares daily. We usually buy the tickets sometime in July. It depends how fast a deal comes up.

Last year, a deal came up early (in May) but my husband didn't want to buy it yet thinking the price would go down further. After that deal, the price started climbing back up and by the first of August, the price was up to $1,000. I was in a panic! He ended up spending all of one day online and finally found another deal for $680ish.

I told him we're not going through that again this year! As soon as the price drops to anywhere in the $600something range we're buying. I don't want to worry about it.

I also like to book it as soon as possible so I can then concentrate on hotels and flights while there.

Good Luck.

Lynn
<BR

I used a San Francisco based outfit last year (Oct19/Nov11) called Ticketplanet.com.

My itinerary was:

New York to Hong Kong via Vancouver with Cathay Pacific

Hong Kong to Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia with Cathay Pacific

Denpasar, Bali to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
with Malaysia Air (MAS)

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Langkawi, Malaysia with MAS

Langkawi, Malaysia to Penang, Malaysia with MAS

Penang to Kuala Lumpur with Cathay Pacific

Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific

Hong Kong to New York via Vancouver with Cathay Pacific

I contacted ticketplanet.com via their website. I emailed them my intinerary and dates. Within 24 hours I had an email reply giving flights and a price.

I called them to give my c/c and then I received the tickets via Fed Ex 2 days later.

I booked in middle late July for my Oct/Nov trip. What did I pay? US $ 1060.

Trips originating on the west coast should be appreciably less.

Michael
