And by the way, if you are in HK on a Sunday, I will highly recommend the "go racing" day out organized by the Jockey Club and sold by various agents...even if you are not a big horse racing fan, its an absulote corker of a day !! Horse racing is madness in HK and its a very unique experiense. pick up from hotel, tour around the magnifican Sha Tin Course, a full lunch buffet at a VIP box right over the winning line...brilliant if you are tired of the markets....

Unfortunately, the Mandarin Hotel is closed until the end of this year as it is being totally renovated.

IMO, the best – and quintessential place -- to go for brunch is the Verandah Restaurant in Repulse Bay. This is a faithful reproduction of the restaurant that was here in the 1920's when there was a hotel on the spot, it's very colonial Raj with rattan chairs and ceiling fans. Really lovely views of the South China Sea and a good brunch, complete with a jazz band. You can take a bus (a thrilling ride up and over the hills and down into Repulse Bay) in about 20-30 minutes from Central, or a taxi (would cost between US$35-40 tell him to take the Aberdeen tunnel unless you want to pay more).

Some, but not all, the big hotels offer a brunch buffet on Sunday. The big buffet meal on Sunday is not quite as popular here, a dim sum lunch on Sunday is still pretty much the family day out. However, for brunch at a hotel, my first choice would be Nicollinis at the Conrad.
Another thought would be Cafe Deco on the Peak, great views, good food and you can walk around the Peak before or after:

Café Deco
Peak Galleria
118 Peak Road
The Peak Hong Kong

The Peak Lookout also on the Peak does not have a full brunch as such but is a very good place for lunch on Sunday, esp if you can get a table on their back terrace. The Food is a mix of Western and Asian, including Indian tandor.

121 Peak Rd

I have not had brunch here, but a place that would have a good view and is generally a good and fun restaurant is ToTT's in the Excelsior Hotel in Causeway Bay.

Finally, if the Harbourside at the Intercontinental serves brunch then that would be a very good choice as well as their view is superb and their food is generally good. You might check the website or give them a call, I just don't know if they have brunch. You might check to see if any of their other restaurants offer brunch.

I agree on the recco for the horse races, they are a lot of fun. Note that they also take place on Wednesday evenings, which are a good way to see the races and not cut into daytime sightseeing. They are only held in the "winter" months from September to June. However, you don't have to take any organized bus tour if you don't want to, especially not to Sha Tin, because as a foreigner you can get VIP tickets on your own and go to Happy Valley right on Hong Kong Island. Races are held Wednesday evenings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The basic admission price is HK$10, which is for standing-room only. However, you can watch from the more exclusive Hong Kong Jockey Club members' enclosure by purchasing a temporary "member's badge" for HK$50 (about US$6.50). It's available upon showing your passport at either the Badge Enquiry Office at the main entrance to the Members' Private Enclosure at Happy Valley, or an easier way is to go to one of the off-track betting centers like the one near the Star Ferry concourse in Central or on Nathan Road in Kowloon where you can buy the badges up to 5 days in advance. Take a look at the website for the Hong Kong Jockey Club at http://www.hkjc.com/english/index.asp. Click on "Come Racing" and then "Overseas Visitors" in the text. The easiest way to get there is to take a taxi from the Star Ferry and have him drop you at the Members Enclosure Entrance.
