Sooner we stayed at the Capital Hotel for a week in March. Our package offered either the Capital or the Palace and we made the wrong choice. The Capital appeared to once have been very nice but now is VERY LONG IN TOOTH,in need of a lot of tender loving care.I would rate it 3 stars at best, the meals were bad and the resturants always empty. The breakfast buffet was good however. The hotel's location is great if you like to walk around the city(we do)with the T. Square and Forbidden City only a 10 minute walk away. The hotel seems to get most of its clients from business groups and meetings. My advice.....stay elsewhere,I think the Palace would be a good choice.Have a good trip.

I totally agree with the comment on the Capitol Hotel. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT BOOK (or let your travel agent) THE CAPITOL HOTEL. It's more than Very Long On The Tooth, it has grown FANGS!!! Just got back from Hong Kong / Macau / Guanghjo (sp)/ Guilin / Xi'An / Beijing trip and stayed at the Capitol in Beijing. I wish I had seen this site before getting there. The rooms were filthy, only English phrases understood and repeated by the staff, and each time we took a shower, it left the bathroom floor under two inches of water (they built the tub so that it's surroundings catches water that then drains, not in the tub, but on the floor!! Even though it is in a great location, it's just not worth the frustration or the money. Thankfully, we didn't let that experience ruin what was otherwise a wonderful trip.

We just returned from China and in Beijing, stayed at the Kerry center. It was an excellant hotel with wonderful breakfasts and we enjoyed it very much.

Would recommend the China World hotel.

Like the Kerry Centre, Shangri La and 4* Traders its operated by the Shangri La Group.

Its the choice of most political VIPS, not that I'm one.

Top Tip - if you plan to stop at a Shangri La hotel join their frequent travellers club - Golden Circle(no minimum stay reuirement or fee)- amongst the many freebies you get is a free breakfast at all their hotels, worth about $30 in beijing

Just got back from China. Stayed at the Grand Hyatt. What a fantastic hotel. Rooms are small but good competent staff and the location make up for that. I would definitely recommend it.

In reply to John Poertner, two messages above:

Cuiming Zhuang Binguan (Cuiming Manor), Nan He Yan Dajie 1, tel 6559 7453, fax 6513 6622. This is an important historic site to afficionados of communist orthodoxy. First built in the 1930s, in 1946–7 it became the office of the Communist Party of China delegation of the Executive Department of the Beiping Military Mediation Section which was responsible for maintaining the cease fire between the Communists and the Nationalists (KMT or Guomin Dang) during the combined effort to repel the Japanese. Restored to its old look (but with rather a better foyer) in 1998 and opened as good, clean mid-price hotel, with an excellent location just east of the Forbidden City’s east gate, and close to Wangfujing. The ‘single’ rooms here have a double bed and a large sitting room, for Y328 ($41) and a large variety of other rooms, with a negotiable 20% off. (These prices are two years old, and the hotel may be now have set its sights higher, but should still be easily negotiable down to these prices unless at a very busy season, as long as you go and do it over the counter.)

Peter N-H
http://members.axion.net/~pnh/China.html
