Beijing , Xi'an, Yangshuo, Zhujiajiao/Shanghai - 14 days Dec09 - Must Do's?

We have finally decided on China (after much family discussion/agruemnet!). Intend to book an Intrepid Journery - Classic China 12 days - http://www.intrepidtravel.com/tripnotes/CKB/2009-01-01

The tour is Beijing 4 days, Xi'an 2 days, Yangshuo 2days, Zhujiajiao/Shanghai starts the end of December 09. We will have an extra day in Bejing and Shangahai.
We are 2 adults and 2 teenage kids (16 & 18). I know it will be COLD but can anyone advise how cold it will really be? Other than the obvious touristy things that the tour includes is there anything we really should see or do? Have a son who would love to see a Panda is that feasible? Any info/advice would be valuable please.

NB I have been following the topic: "A Two-Week Visit to China (Beijing, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Suzhou) by 111op " which has been very informative also.

Hi Cobs

we visited China in May as a family like you - 2 adults and 2 teenage kids (15 & 19) and had fabulous time. Our trip is summarized here if you are interested:

Looks like your tour included most of the must dos. I find China to be very tourist friendly and very easy to visit independently without a tour.

Your son can see the pandas at the Beijing zoo. They are in cages but my son still enjoyed seeing them. The Summer Palace is also very beautiful, highly recommended, if there is time.

In Shanghai we visited the water town Tongli on a day trip and liked it very much.

You will have a great time in China.

Have fun planning.

Cobs-
Did you end up going on the Intrepid Classic China tour? I am considering booking for my husband and myself and am interested in what it was like.

Thanks.

As cobs hasn't uttered a word in here since October 14 2009, I suspect - just suspect - that you may not get a reply, Annie.
