Beijing Tianjing

Hi,
We will be going to Beijing & Tianjing next week on a free and easy trip and we have already booked our hotel in Beijing for 8 nights. Does anyone know whether there is any night train from Tianjing back to Beijing.
I have been to Beijing before and have seen most of the tourists "must see" places. I would appreciate it very much if anyone could suggest other interesting places to visit either in Beijing or Tianjing since we we have a total of 8 full days to amuse ourselves.
Thank you very much.

'Tianjin', by the way.

The short answer is that the two cities are far too close for there to be night trains (if you mean overnight). Most of the trains listed above are fairly basic and you wouldn't want to board them, and some of them go to the Beijing South station rather than the main Beijing Station. But if you pick out the trains with three figure numbers between T532 and T554 (but not including T536), these are comfortable double-decker all-seat express trains, for which you can just walk up and buy tickets at the gate, or, at the last minute, on board the train itself. Outbound it works the same way--the train nos. are the odd numbers immediately below the even ones given above. Later in the evening I'd suggest taking a bus back from Tianjin--the people outside the railway station shouting "Beijing! Beijing!" are the ones you want.

Tianjin's sights include a large area of colonial era buildings including the battlemented Gordon House, the refined Astor Hotel, the art museum in the former French administration building, several banks with wooden and stained-glass intererior, and whole streets of mansions and department stores. The Guangdong Guild Hall within the old Chinese city is worth seeing, and contains a beautiful Qing-era theatre. It's possible to construct a walk around a fine Buddhist temple (Dabei Yuan), a tiny backstreet industrial museum (San Tiao Shi Lishi Bowuguan), and a small mosque (Qingzhen Si) which has all the charm of a hutong walk in Beijing (although when I was there in December it did look as though large areas--just like Beijing--had been flattened). You might also want to visit the antiques ("antiques&quot market in Shenyang Dao.

I'd recommend first a trip out to Yanliuqing to see the splendid 12-courtyarded Shi Jia Dayuan, a fine merchant's mansion you'll have to go to Shanxi Province to equal. It's about 20km from the town centre, and best tackled by taxi, although bus 153 from the West Station also goes there. Zhang Yimou filmed part of "Huozhe" ("To Live&quot here.

As for things you possibly haven't seen in and around Beijing: the Milu Deer Park, the Western Qing Tombs, Chuan Dixia village, leafy Jietai Si and Tanzhe Si, the Underground City, Huguang Guildhall, Confucius Temple, Altar of Agriculture, and Dongyue Miao are all worth making an effort to see.

Peter N-H
http://members.axion.net/~pnh/China.html

Thank you very much for the valuable information.
Our hotel is close to Beijing Railway Station and we intend to make daytrips to Tianjin.
From the timetable given above, it seems the last express train departing from Tianjin is about 6 pm. We would prefer to have dinner in Tianjin before going back to Beijing.
Peter, you mentioned that we can catch buses back to Beijing outside Tianjin Railway Station. Are there frequent bus services and do you know where will these buses stop in Beijing?

The last bus will probably only be an hour to an hour-and-a-half later. It would be best to ask the shouting people when you get off the train, and then make your plans. In Beijing they arrive at the Zhaogong Kou bus station which is on the south third ring road just south of Zhaogong Kou Qiao. You could also try calling that station when you get to Beijing and asking what time the last bus from Tianjin gets there: 6723 7328.

Peter N-H
http://members.axion.net/~pnh/China.html
