BANGKOK - WHERE ARE BEST MARKET AREAS? Day & Night...

Greetings -

We are planning a trip to Bangkok and like to go to all the markets. We've been to Hong Kong and love the Ladies' Market and Temple Street Night Market.

Can anyone tell me where I can find places like this in Bangkok?

Also, any suggestions of places to stay in lively, active areas for around $3,500 Baht ($100 US). We like good access to shopping, busy "squares" or meeting places and major sites. We don't do much of the bar-hopping scene so are not concerned with being close to taverns. Our interests are more shopping, people-watching, and a little sightseeing.

Any help is appreciated. We aren't going until late fall.

Thanks

Hi,
I am not good in English but i will try. The most famous open market is Jatujak. There are everything its open every holidays.
There are many shopping centers Central,Maboonkrong,Robinson, etc, it is the real brand name but cheaper than Singapore or Hongkong.
And the other famous market is Soi la- lai saab it is in Si-lom road it is the center of women's costume you will buy untill you realize that you run out of money.
Not forget!Thailand is very hot and rainny now.

Hi Daeng -

Thank you for your reply.

Can I ask you, how is the weekend market at the park? I read that it is very big.

Also, is Patpong a good area to stay in a hotel? We were looking at a hotel called the Narai Hotel on 222 Silom Road. Is this hotel O.K.?

Thank you for your help.

hi ,
Jatujak is the open air market it's not too far from Narai hotel 30-45 min by taxi-meter(about 4us$)This market is next to jatujak park it is the same area. The market separated in many zone
costume, furniture, book, gardening, housing, pet, art,a ntique, ect.I think Narai hotel is ok.
At night in Patpong is very funny ther are many pub, disco, restaurant and walking soi(street)You can buy manythings here and not forget to ask for the cheaper price.
Bye

Hi Lynn,

My family and I are also going to Bangkok and Phuket soon. We're staying at the Indra Regent, in the Pratunam area. I also love markets and apparently at this hotel, you walk out the back door straight into a good market area, with plenty of restaurants etc. We also enquired about the Patpong area but was told that, although the markets are good, the're only open at night and the area is very sleazy. Many people have told me about the Chatuchak Market, which, I think, is away from most hotel areas anyway. I definitely intend to go, but it's only open on weekends.

We leave on 15th September and return on 6th October, I don't know when you're going but if it's later than that I can let you know what it's like, and if I find any other good markets.

Hi Teresa -

Thanks for your post. Actually, you will be there before us. We don't go until November. I would love it if you could email when you get back and tell me about some of the things you did like and even some of the things you didn't.

In regards to hotel, we will be there for 10 days so have decided to divide our time between a cheap hotel around Silom Road (we haven't chosen it yet), 3 nights at Westin Banyan Tree, and 2 nights at Shangri-La. That way, we can get a feel of what type of hotel we like the best.

Thanks
