Bangkok/Bali questions?

We are thinking about taking an escorted tour of Thailand that goes to to Bangkok,Chiangmai and Phuket but we would like to stay longer and go to Bali. What area of Bali has a nice beach and lots of things to see and do?
How far is it between Bali and Bangkok by air? What airlines and hotels can anyone recommend in Bali?

Val,
Bali is a beautiful island, and shouldn't be missed. However, don't go for the beaches. You'll find that the beaches in Thailand (in and around Phuket)are far superior to those in Bali.
My suggestion is to get your beach time in Thailand, and use your time in Bali to explore the island.

I just came back from Bali where I stayed at Taman Harum. It is in Mas which is the woodcarvers section of the city. It is nice and very inexpensive. The staff is quite friendly and will try to meet your needs. There is a shuttlebus there that will take you to any place you wish to go. The shortfall is that it is was at least 3 hours from the airport. For beaches in Bali I recommend Sanur and Nusa Dua. Kuta is too touristy and drug trafficking does occur there. I took Singapore Airlines which has to be the best airline I have ever flown and I travel often.

I left Bali and went to Singapore which was like a 1 1/2 hour flight. Being that Bangkok is not too far away I would estimate it to be a 3 hr flight between the two.

I have to agree with Val - leave the beaches for Thailand. One of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand, I think, is Krabi - just across a bridge to the mainland from Phuket - this place is amazing and you shouldn't miss it.

I stayed at the Grand Bali Beach Hotel in Sanur on Bali. The hotel was fantastic and the location meant that we could eat out at the many restaurants in Sanur - you'll find that restaurant owners lay on transport for diners - just ask if you'd like this service - there's no charge! The one place I would avoid is Kuta - although it does have lots of shopping - but if you're into bungie jumping etc it will be OK for you.
Not to be missed is the white river rafting - it was rougher than I expected but once you get into it its great.

Bali, when I was there (March) was very humid and quite wet for the first week. Apparently April onwards gets less humid and dryer.

I flew Singapore Airlines and I agree they are the best!!!

Happy holiday

Kristie
