Bali: Sanur or Benoa?

We are going to Bali in October and are confused? We want to experience the people and culture. We have been looking at the Radisson in Sunar and the Melia Benoa. Any other suggestions or commments are welcome. The other resort we have looked at was the Bali Gardenia Resort in Nusa Dua. Thanks for the help. Jane

I have just returned from Sanur Radisson. The hotel is fine and staff very helpful. I was disappointed that the local beach is dark brown volcanic sand, but Radisson have a shuttle (free) to the better beach at Sanur(2km). We only went to Benoa to take a sea trip to Lembongan (worth it, as it is what we thought Bali would be relatively deserted beaches with palms etc)To experience the people get out of the south (Denpasar, Kuta, Sanur, Nusa Dua)tourist area. Hire a car with driver and head inland (Rupiah 200 000-300 000 for a whole day, definitely worth it) We used a young man putting himself through University, good English and local knowledge -Wayan Budiarta Fax 62 361 757 437.

We just returned from a two week stay at
the Melia Benoa and found it to be a lovely hotel - and we're quite fussy.
the beach is pretty - white sand but the water leaves alot to be desired because of the tides - when it's out it's weedy. The hotel keeps it very clean. I would not stay in Sanur. Nice place to visit but Benoa and Nusa Dua are much nicer to come home to.
