Bali Road Travel
My wife and I will be traveling to Bali in late February and we are looking for a way to get around by road, but not driving myself. Anyone know a dependable mode of transport, car, driver, guide ? Any suggestions appreciated.

Putt

Best is a local driver/guide. Ask your hotel front desk staff. Don't hire just anybody in the street, in case of an accident, this could turn out real bad. Drivers/guides provided by the hotels are usually a little more expensive, but have the knowledge in English and the sitesyou wish to see and you are covered with an insurance in case of an incident.
Have fun.

You would be quite safe hiring a driver recommended by your hotel. Also, there are numerous travel companies in Ubud that do group day tours. I can also recommend a travel agent (located in Sanur, but he'll pick you up anywhere.) His name is Kurt Morscheck and he can be reached at [email protected]
He recently sent me a list of some of the tours he does - they ranged from $25 to $40 a day (each for a group of two), depending on the distance involved. If you'd like me to forward that list to you, just e-mail me at the above address.
Lynda

Hiring a car and driver is certainly the best way, hands down. The cost for an approx. 8 hour day with AC and english speaking driver is tops US$30 for a full car, for up to 4 passengers. They should be able to take you anywhere you want and not follow a set tour agenda. The local drivers, if they are indeed Balinese, all know the attractions both large and small.

Be careful with tour agencies, they are very adept at steering unknowing tourists to commission shops that they have previous agreements with and usually only want to follow set tours, with not much flexibility. I agree you should ask to see proof of insurance and the government license to take tourists.

Most of the traffic accidents with locals and tourists alike occur with motorbikes.
