bali for 2 weeks-Canggu or Ubud?
Looking to rent a villa in Bali for 2 weeks. We want to have a good view, quiet and relaxed. We also want to have opportunities to see the people and life outside of our villa without having to drvie too far. We like snooping around in towns, markets, lunching outside and watching the scene. ....etc. We are a middle aged NYC couple looking to chill out...but also want some adventure days ... party scene not for us. Also, is it okay to wear jewlery. Would I feel safe doing so?

Would you consider dividing your time between Canggu and Ubud? While Canggu is nice (we stayed at Hotel Tugu there a few years ago), the Ubud area has much, maybe more to offer. Either place can be quiet and relaxed. As you probably know, Canggu is just outside of the Kuta - Seminyak resort area so if you want to enjoy the shopping and dining areas there, they are close by. As for Ubud, nothing beats staying just outside town with views of the rice fields - again, close enough to enjoy shopping in Ubud and the craft villages nearby plus excellent dining opportunities in town. If you like adventure, there is also white water rafting just outside of Ubud.
Also consider hiring a driver for a couple of days to show you the sites elsewhere on Bali - Putu Arnawa is a favorite of those on this forum that have been to Bali.
Bali is a very safe place but I would not wear any ostentatious jewelry. When visiting poor countries like Indonesia (Bali), my wife leaves her expensive jewelry at home and just wears her wedding band and simple earrings.

I wouldn't put all of my time in just one place. I've been to Ubud which is very nice, but with 2 weeks I'd choose 2-3 different areas. I don't know about the jewelry situation. I didn't take any with me. Happy Travels!

andgil - what month are you thinking of going? i am just at the very early stages of planning a trip in Feb/Mar '08 and too was thinking of Bali but some research has indicated that this time of the year is very humid and wet ... so now I'm not so sure. Anybody else had any experience in Bali in Feb or March?

we had a twin centre with just 9 days in Bali- Sanur and Ubud. Loved where we were in Ubud- the Waka Namya. In an artists village 15 min walk into Ubud centre and with rice fields immediately to the back of the hotel.

We just got back from Bali yesterday, staying for nine days in the Canggu area (just one road north). We loved it there but it was fairly isolated and driving into Seminyak was long during commute times (up to an hour to get home between 4 pm and 6 pm). The whole Seminyak area is way too crowded for us, but you might enjoy it as there is a lot to see.
With two weeks I would definitely split time between 2 or even 3 places. A driver is a must, as not only will it keep you safe (the roads are insane) but a good driver will have an inside track on shopping, dining, touring, etc.
Have a wonderful time. We are ready to go back.
