Anywhere Thai travel magazine's best hotel list for Bangkok

My suitcase is sitting in the dining room, still unpacked from Malaysia. I guess I'll have to get to it at some point but so far, every time I see it, I just walk away in disgust.
Thanks for posting those lists Guenmai.

Hawaiian Traveler....I just ought to live out of my suitcase...well, I guess I sort of do in a way...with all of these vacations. There could be worse things in life, huh? When I get to my destination, I usually don't even unpack most of the suitcase. I just view it as a drawer on wheels! Happy Travels!

Hawaiian Traveler...I really wish you and Mrs. HT could come to the Boston GTG along with the rest of the Hawaiian group.I start laughing all over every time I think of that evening. We'll all have to hook up again in summer 2006. Happy Travels!

I am curious why the Peninsula-Bangkok is not on the best hotel list if not in the top 5 at least in top 10.
Conte Nast, Fodor's. Frommer's. Travel & Leisure had them in the top group in the surveys they reported in the second half of 2005 so the data is likely based on input of early 2005.
Plus throughout the Forum so many travelers have enjoyed the Grand Deluxe rooms as well as a price of about $225/night with breakfast, service and tax.
I am perplexed.

The Bangkok Peninsula is the best hotel I have ever stayed in, by far. I stayed at the Marriott Resort and Spa (#18 on this list). There is no way to compare these hotels. This leads me to believe that this magazine's hotel ranking system is massively flawed.

At least the "best urban" list seems to be listed by location...Sukhumvit together, river together....so I don't think it could really be called a ranking.
We stayed in the Conrad BKK (#10) this past trip, and while it was nice, it wasn't even close to the Penn (#16), where we stayed the previous 3 trips. They are two totally different class hotels.

Sorry I missed the post that had the Peninsula as #16. In 2001 it was one of the finest hotels we had stayed in in all our travels over 30+ years. That was in a Deluxe Room. Now we are going to be in a Grand Deluxe so we hope it will be a little nicer. I hope in the 5+ years the hotel has been open they have keep it "like new".

Stan, I've stayed in both the deluxe and grand deluxe. The only difference is, the grand deluxe is on a higher floor. Some rooms are a little bigger than others, this goes for both deluxe and grand. Ask not to be near the elevator for a room that's a bit bigger.

I think we are going to go for a Grand Deluxe and will ask to be away from the elevator. The balcony room is not an option as you are not allowed one with a child - I think this is a sensible precaution in any event.
The price quoted on the website Kristina posted has offered me $203 but I am going to to speak to the hotel directly and also Amex Centurion to see if either can match it.

As far as how the Pen was rated, well, folks from different cultures like different things. Even if you read hotel/city/favorite-place ratings...etc.. in Conde Nast Traveller and Traveler magazine, you will notice that, for example, Amercians and the British many times have different opinions on favorites/best. So, since Anywhere Magazine is an ASIAN magazine, the results might have something to do with that. Folks should just stay where they like to stay and not take ratings that seriously. Different strokes for different folks.I read them for fun. Happy Travels!

Two more for the list: Pimalai resort in Lanta (one of the "Small Luxury Hotels" group) is terrific--very isolated.
Best value--Yaang
Come Village in Chiang Mai--a terrifc, new hotel where the food is great, they have a pool, and the service is warm and wonderful. The lobby is open to the outdoors, and it always seems like a family party there. Be sure you get their home web site--it's NOT the Yaang Come Village web site---that really gets you to Sawadee Travel that books rooms all over Asia. It's just www.yaangcome.com. This is not high luxury, but it's aesthetic, new, clean, and delightful. It's also in a great location and very homey.
