Lariam is not available OTC in India. In India u will get another derivative called Lariago (which is also not OTC), but most of the Chemist shops here will more often than not be willing to sell it to u without a prescription.

Read the current cdc information regarding malaria prevention in India. I believe Lariam is no longer effective here (regardless fact you have taken for other destinations with no side effects). You might require the newer Malarone, which have few if any side-effect compared to Lariam. And discuss with your physician or travel med specialist before doing anything.

Sandi, larium is effective in India, as per the cdc website. Only in parts of SE Asia and Africa is there larium-resistant malaria.

Kathie - thanks for the update. I hadn't checked the cdc site when I posted my thread (my error), but overall Malarone is much gentler on the system, if one can consider these particular meds gentle... they do what they do the best versus the alternative.

Sandi I did check the CDC web beforehand and found lariam to be effective and as we have taken it twice w/o any problems its the choice for us. Also its a once per week dosing. if it aint broke don't fix it.
