There are some larger taxis around, a "station wagon" or van like vehicle but they are very rare. When you come out of the airport most likely the taxi drivers will try to get you to use 2 regular cars but if you want to travel together do keep an eye out for the taxi vans.

for my first arrival i would book a "limo"...it costs more but it worth every cent after a long flight....it might cost 1000B...the trunks are much larger....the inside of the car is larger...most taxis are toyota corollas....with 5 decent sized suitcases i would not use one taxi....of course two taxis would be about the cost of one limo..
AOT, the official airport taxi service has tons of availability at the airport 24/7

I agree with gpanda, that a taxi will NOT be big enough for four people and their luggage! I travel solo, and often times, my one large bag is all that fits in the trunk, and the smaller bag (I check two) is sitting on the front seat beside the driver!
We (DS and I) will be greeting first timers to Bangkok (from Germany) in April. DS and I will go to the airport by taxi to pick them up, but then will arrange for a van to take us all back to the hotel together. Much more comfortable!
