My comment on not visiting Kyoto was based on my understanding of your comment above. I understood that to mean that you would take the shinkansen to Kyoto and the next day fly to China. I suppose the goodness of that plan depends on the timing.
If you are staying two nights, then that is a whole different consideration, especially if you (like me) might find riding the shinkansen to be as much entertainment as transportation.
JTB offers shinkansen tour packages that include Nozomi shinkansen tickets and a night or two hotel. This may be worth considering in your case, as I think they have one-way train options.
