Adelphi Suites soi 8, Bangkok?

Anyone stayed here? It is just about on the corner of Sukhumvit and soi 8, by the Nana BTS station. We've got 3 nights booked in an executive apartment. If it is really nice, we'll stay longer. If it's a dive, we'll move out!!

Any opinions?

Thanks.

Carol

I just heard back from mag385 (John) who is in BKK right now. He checked the place out (although the suites are fully booked right now, so he didn't get a look at one... yet). John says the place is great and that we should really like it. I can't wait to try it!

PS... I'm flying FIRST CLASS on this trip!! Yippeeeee! Lots of ff miles though...

We have 4 nights booked there in March! It has been getting good reviews on tripadvisor.
Enjoy first class-- I am so jealous!

What drew you to Adelphi? Just curious. I happened on it while doing a search for serviced apartments. We've stayed in quite a few of them over the years and wanted something new, and closer to the BTS than where we've been staying recently.

Adelphi looks like it will fit the bill just fine!

(I've used up almost all of my very hard-earned ff miles for first class so I'd better enjoy it... I won't have that many miles saved up again for quite a while!! lol)

I just posted a query on Pulley's post about Centre Point serviced apts, and then I saw your post.

Do you have any opinion on which is better located, better value and nicer in general?

Thanks.

Location depends on what you are doing in Bangkok. I'm there for shopping and visiting friends, so being in the Sukhumvit area is a big plus for me.

I've never stayed at Centre Point so I cannot rate it. I've also never stayed at Adelphi! But the Adelphi is new (Nov 07 opening) and is closer to the BTS (skytrain) than the other Sukhumvit area apartments I've stayed in.

But maybe someone who has stayed at a Centre Point (you don't say which one you are looking at) will give you their feedback. You might want to post your own thread... you will get more attention to your specific question that way.

Carol-
I first read about Adelphi on a tripadvisor forum. We have stayed in serviced apartments in other cities and enjoyed them... It had everything that we wanted, close to the skytrain, and it's new, so I just booked it and figured I would see how the reviews work out. So far, so good!

They are good about emailing back to me if/when I had a question. I think the place will be great! I hope your experience is good as well. This is trip #12 to BKK for me (since summer '01). I agree that serviced apartments are a great choice, and especially for stays of longer than just 2-3 days. I enjoy the space and the kitchen. I'm glad to see that this apartment also has a washer/dryer!

Carol,
When do you leave? Your son lives in BKK, correct? How nice that you can visit him!

Hi Liz,
I leave Feb 3. DS does not live in Thailand, but he does spend quite a bit of time there. I have usually gone when he has been there, but not always. I've had two trips in 2007 ON MY OWN, with only my wits about me, and my wonderful Thai friends.

DH leaves on Jan 26 and can stay in BKK until Feb 16. Wish I could do the same, but we own a business and I'M THE ONE WHO DEALS W/taxes, payroll, etc... not HIM!! lol Means I have to be home at least 2 days at the beginning of the month. Oh well, at least I get to sneak away for 12 days! DH says he WILL be working some of his time in BKK... we'll see about that!

Carol,

Here are the reviews or several places. My son lives on Soi 12 and has been helpful.

1. Centrepoint soi 10: This place is great -- not as fancy as Emporium, but very quiet and comfortable. At the end of soi 10, very residential, about a 15 min. walk from our place on soi 12. Nice rooms -- similar to Emporium: separate bedroom, living room, kitchen, balcony. Staff are friendly and there's a 24 hr. shuttle to Sukhumvit. HOWEVER this place caters to Japanese businessmen and has ZERO nonsmoking rooms. The room I was in definitely smelled, and I bet most of them have at least a slight odor from past guests. Really a shame as this is a great place. Has a pool, restaurant, fitness center etc.
Cost: the Internet rate is 4200 baht (about $140) per day plus 5% tax for two weeks.

2. Admiral Suites: this place is a dump. Dark, dingy, not at all nice. And down soi 22, near Emporium, is a bit sleazy.
Cost: 3500 baht daily, but don't even consider it.

3. Imperial Queen's Park: also not very nice. Kind of run down -- you can never tell from hotels' Web sites! A huge place but a bit crumbling. Next to a nice park and not far from Emporium but really just not great.
Cost: 4400 baht daily, but I don't think you'd like it.

4. I haven't checked out Adelphi Suites, but I doubt you'd like this area -- Nana -- as it's a big red light district where all the strip clubs are.

5. I haven't checked out Sofitel Residence Asok.

Bottom line from what I can tell so far: Emporium is far and away the nicest, but at 10,000 baht ($326) per day, it's expensive. The location is great and it's super-nice though.

Thanks for the reviews from your son. I think the Emporium would be a beautiful place to stay. Our guenmai, here on fodors, always stays there. The price is about 3 times what I like to pay... so I probably will not stay there until after I've won the lottery!! lol

I know all about soi 4 (Nana) and know how to avoid it if I want to. I have walked down soi 6 and soi 8 rather than soi 4. This will be my 12th trip to Bangkok, since summer 2001. I've stayed right on soi 4 (Omni Tower) a number of times, and have a good friend who lives there. Omni Tower is really not a bad place to stay. Much cheaper than the Emporium. I prefer not to walk down soi 4 to get to and from the skytrain. Not so much for the red light factor, but just because it can get very crowded and the sidewalk is very narrow. Soi 6 and 8 are good options for getting to/from the skytrain from the Omni, while avoiding the crowded Nana area.

DH and DS both love to play a good game of pool. Soi 4 had their favorite pool hall, which closed down about two years ago and is now a new apartment building! My dear friend Maeng used to be a manager at this pool hall. She and I manage to shop together everytime I get to Bangkok. Soi 4 still does have a couple of other pool bars where DH and DS continue to play a game of pool. The Thais are very good players, BTW.

I may check out the Centre Point on soi 10, but I have a feeling I will like the Adelphi better, just because it is a short walk to and from the BTS. I usually have my hands for of shopping bags... I DO go to BKK to SHOP, after all!!!

Again, thanks for the information. I'm excited about staying at Adelphi, and I'll be sure to give a full report!

10,000 baht a day at Emporium? For what size apartment and prices. They have a LOT of different sizes. I've never paid that much and I'm in an 80 square meter studio....for 6,600 baht. There are 3 sizes of studios so I doubt that even the smallest studio...66 square meters...would cost 10,000 baht. The big advantage at Emporium is that there are 3 size studio apartments so one doesn't have to go for a one-bedroom or larger.
As for soi 22, I wouldn't stay on that street if one paid me...dumpy...I just walked down it week before last out of curiosity. It's about a 10 minute walk from Emporium.
There's a brand new Centrepoint...Grand Centre Point Rajadamri...which is on the side street to the Four Seasons. On Jan 3rd, I went over to the FS to meet Robbietravels and her husband, as they were staying at the FS. While sitting in the lobby and waiting to meet them I was reading the Bangkok Post. There was a huge article on the brand new Centre Point Rajadamri. I didn't have time to go in and check it out as I was leaving BKK to fly home that day and I also wanted to spend some time with Robbietravels and her husband so I was very pressed for time. But, I could see it from the corner in the FS area. It's less than a 5-minute walk to the Rajadamri skytrain station. Happy Travels!

Carol,

We are now very seriously thinking of booking Adelphi Suites April 15th - 24th. Last year we stayed at President Solitaire & loved all the room. I noticed Adelphi is managed by the same company and they have a washer & dryer! We want/need a one bedroom and Emporium for 10K baht is just too much. When I told our son it was in the Nana area he just dismissed it thinking it was in the seedy side of Nana. We need a trip report as soon as you get back!

Thanks,
Mike

That's great!! I hope first class is worth all those miles for you. I think MINE will be. I fly first class around the USA on upgrade certificates, in those regular old seats... not such a unique experience. And business class to and from Asia is nice. But.. I can't wait to try the UA "first suite" all the way from ORD to BKK in a few weeks!! Part if the experience is getting there (in grand style...). Enjoy!

I will be reporting "live" from BKK, as always, so will have up to the minute news about Adelphi and the area around it.

Should add that there is a remote possibility that I would be back in BKK at the same time you are there. Our friends from Germany would like to meet in BKK sometime in April. Maybe it will be then?? If so, we'll have to meet up!

Mike
