A friend is interested in Bali...
I've been encouraging a friend of mine to join Fodor's after I got great advice for my upcoming trip. I told her I'd get her started by writing in for her this time ~
I have travelled to Bali twice, but it was about 15, and then 10 years ago. No doubt much has changed! My friend is in her mid-20's, and is flying to Bali from August 1st through the 5th. She'll be travelling on her own, following a month-long trip to Thailand, Viet Nam, and Laos. She's looking for a lovely place to stay that is safe, has a pool, views, and preferably has on-site yoga and meditation. She'd like to be in Ubud, or stay someplace close with transport in and out of town. I would make recommendations based on my experience, but it's been too long. Villas or strictly honeymoon destinations aren't really suitable. I think her price range is around $100/night - maybe $65 to $150 including taxes, etc.
Thanks for any ideas!

Well, I'd suggest you introduce your friend to Google search as well as Fodor's. A search on 'on-site yoga and meditation Bali' comes up with a vast array of options. Then introduce her to Tripadvisor. Then tell her about the little Search button up above. Type in Bali.
I'm wondering just how much yoga and meditation your friend is thinking she'll achieve - in a four day trip to Bali. I can't really understand why one has to go to Bali to do it - but that's not the point, I guess.
Look for 'filmwill' in the search. He's just back from Bali and had some rather thrilling information about some form of tantric massage... lol lol lol.

Your friend should contact the Yoga Barn in Ubud. They offer a wide range of classes and events and are easily accessible from wherever she would stay.
At her budget I can't think of any place in Ubud that offers on site activities, but it's a small community and yoga/meditation centers are commute-able.
In Canggu (Southwest coast area) there's Desa Seni. I haven't stayed there myself so can't comment but it looks inviting. The Candi Dasa (middle eastcoast) is also reinventing itself as a wellness destination. I've heard good things about Ponkok Pisang but haven't been there.
Yoga is ubiquitous in Bali and there are a lot of organizations that have jumped on the bandwagon without the proper credentials. Your friend should get references.
August is high season in Bali, even for yogis so your friend should definitely reserve in advance.

take a look at the lower end places at alam shanti....they are in that range of cost and quite lovely and peaceful...they drive you back and forth to town or you can walk....great breakfast....very quiet and relaxing with two lovely pools... only 8 units... they do have their own spa...
they also have 4 sister properties which might accomodate her slightly cheaper as well...

I use www.balitravelforum.com for my Bali enquiries. It's a very active forum, lots of postings from people currently in Bali, as well as frequent travellers to the island.
