Kavey - though irritating at the time [especially the taxi] I tend to put those sorts of things down to the vagaries of travel and being in another country - these things happen. [but that's easier to say when it happens to someone else, I know!]

did you get your dinner in the end? Nice to meet up with fellow fodorites.

We had a lovely dinner -- a whole roast goose at Kam's, along with other delicious side dishes. It was wonderful to get together with some fellow Fodorites.

Oh it's not a big deal and would never stop me recommending the hotel to others nor from staying there again (though would probably look to stay on HK Island next time). It's just to explain what I meant by bizarre behaviours, irritating and wholly unnecessary but not a huge deal at all.

Yes, as Internetwiz says, we had a fabulous roast goose meal at Kam's - great choice, so good!

funny - our best meal in HK was roast goose - I wonder if it was at the same place?

Kam's is a hole in the wall on Hennessey (?) in Wan Chai.

On my last visit to HK, I did stay on HK Island, in Wan Chai. I don't like Kowloon too much, but the Salisbury has million dollar views, so I think it's worth staying there at least once (unless you can afford the Pen).

Yes we loved the views.
If people would like to see some of my photos as shared during the trip, here's my instagram link direct to those HK ones:

Interesting read as I'm in Hong Kong at present and it's my first time here.

Happy Travels!

annhig: I'm staying at the Four Seasons in Central which is great. I'm here for 5 nights, 6 days.

As for Hong Kong, well, I'm just not feeling it, but I'm really glad that I tried it out. I fly back to Singapore in a couple of days and stay for nearly a week before flying home. I've been on vacation for nearly 6 weeks now. I'm really very into S.E. Asia and feel very at home in that region. I've been going there for 19 years.

Happy Travels!

Sorry that you're not quite "feeling" HK. The best bits for us were going up the escalators in the mid-levels, going up the Peak, and taking the trams out to the market in the east of Central. oh yes, and the ferry. Wish we'd had longer really.

My favourite area was the Tai Po Market area where we did a food walk. Both inside the three storey market building and out on the streets, I loved walking around looking at the food produce.

I agree, Kavey - the produce is amazing. I'd love to have done a food tour but we didn't have enough time.

You can visit independently too next time you go. I passed the tip onto Internetwiz and I think she went a few days later and also really liked walking around that area. It's in the New Territories but easy on the metro.

Sorry that you're not quite "feeling" HK."

Well, we all win some and lose some. But, as I mentioned, I'm glad that I gave it a try. Smiles.

Happy Travels!

Yes, we went to Tai Po and really enjoyed it. The MTR ride there was pretty. We took the bus back, which was really interesting as we were the only westerners on it.

We also went to North Point market; we took the tram there which made it a lot of fun.

Sorry you're not feeling HK, Guenmai. I'm partial to SE Asia, too, so I understand.

I'm with Guenmai, HK didn't do much for me. Did like the mid level elevators and that area. We saw very few Westerners in most places. We probably saw the most and not a lot the day we went up the peak.

We liked Hong Kong in many ways, particularly for the food and the views across the harbour, it was also relaxing and "easy" and had enough to keep us entertained for a few days. We have said we'll happily do a one or two night stopover there on the way to other destinations in East Asia in the future.

For us, it didn't capture our hearts as Japan has so I do understand where you are coming from Guenmai. Then again, it's one city rather than a whole country. Though I guess even on that point, we've spent 18 nights in Kyoto so far but could happily still do a month or two for Kyoto alone, whereas I can't imagine doing a month in HK!

I was so happy to get back to Singapore yesterday afternoon as it was so upbeat. Today, I went over to Paris Baguette in Wisma to grab a bite and two of the workers came over to me with a big smile and welcomed me back and they had only seen me once before and right before I flew from Singapore to Hong Kong just a week ago.

Happy Travels!
