Whether you go to Sanur -- or any other Bali beach -- depends on whether you want to do the kind of things that you can only do on a beach. If you like the idea of swimming, surfing, sunning, walking on the beach, eating at seafood restaurants etc. then yes, spend a few days at the beach and enjoy the ocean. Each of the southern beaches has its own personality, so the beach you choose would depend on how you like to spend your time.
I would agree that there's no reason to stay in Denpasar itself. It's the diplomatic, service and business heart of Bali, and aside from a museum and performing arts center, not of much interest to the tourist.

What Kathie is saying is Nusa Duamis very Westernized area with hotels and restaurants that cater to tourists. If you want the feel of a Balinese hotel and culture , then Sanur, Ubud and the other areas will give you that feeling.
