Nat -

We had a 9.5 hour layover (plane landed at 6:35 am and left at 3:55 p.m.) in Tokyo last December and it was barely enough time to go into Tokyo for 2-3 hours. I would say that a 6 hour layover would not be enough time.

Figure it takes at least an hour to get "settled" and get on the train if it's a slow time of day in the airport. The train takes 1 hour 10 min each way. That puts you down to 2+ hours. Then allow for at least an hour to be at the gate before your next flight. This leaves you with 1-ish hour in town. I hate to say it but I would recommend against it.

People thought we were nuts going into Tokyo with the 9 hour layover but we went for it anyhow. Another thing to consider is getting a train back to the airport. We stepped off the train in Tokyo station at 9:25 a.m. and went directly to the ticket counter to buy our seats back. The time we wanted was around 1:00 and it was already almost sold out. We got 2 of the last tickets on the 1:03 p.m. train. What luck! If we hadn't, we would have had to leave at 11:30 which wouldn't have given us much time. The later trains were too late.

You might try going into Narita. I believe a taxi into the main area is only 20 minutes or so. Better than risking missing your flight!

Good luck.

Lynn
<BR

Six hours is not enough time to get into Tokyo, see anything and get back in time for your flight. Try going into Narita to help fill the time rather than staying at the airport. You should be able to figure out how to get there and back once you get to the airport.

I had a similar layover once and I put my bags in storage and headed into Narita town. 6 hours is probably not enough for Tokyo... the Narita Express alone takes an hour each way (and it's quite expensive). I've found it takes a while to clear customs everytime. Narita is small but charming... the city shrine is typical of Japanese shrines... lanterns, towers, prayer halls. The place is complete quiet and peaceful as well. Take a local train to town...
