I'm on line in Ban Bueng! I did not realize there is wifi here at the weekend house. But I'll only post a quick report, as I want to be sociable with our hosts!

We got a private car from Adelphi yesterday afternoon to drive us to Ban Bueng, rather than try to rent a car. The cost is 1500 baht each way. Hopefully the driver will return today at the appointed time, for our return to BKK!

Lars made a Danish dinner (fabulous). He calls it a traditional farmers meal. We had roast duck & sauce, roast pork, boiled potatoes, carmelized potatoes, red cabbage, and plenty of wine and beer and a home made grog/glog??? Don't know what you really call it.

It is so quiet out here in the countryside. No loud noises (except for the 3-year old screaming with delight at her new toys and books and whatever....) Christmas is certainly more fun with a little one around... a little one who is completely 'into' the existance of Santa Claus. What fun!

Ladies, Pong gave me two hand made necklaces that I wish I could find somewhere in the markets/malls in BKK. I would love to buy a supply of them... each one is unique. But she tells me that the girl selling them travels around and does not have a 'shop' for selling. Darn! I don't think there is any way for me to find them. They will remain a secret 'find' I guess. Pong says she will buy more of them next time she sees the girl.

We slept in until about 7:30 this morning. Lars made an omelet to die for. More like an 'egg cake' (which they call it in Denmark, maybe?) in a skillet, cut like a pizza, in slices. It had sundried tomatoes, onion, spices, and the best part was the feta cheese in dollops melted on the top! So good!

Lars also made a shrimp salad that you spread on slices of toast. It had shrimp, dill, creme fraiche (like sour cream), mayo, not sure what else. Excellent! Lars keeps saying he would like to open a restaurant, but everyone tells him that it is sooo much work, and not a lot of fun. He would NOT enjoy cooking for a business that has to make money to keep going. We will settle for his exceptional cooking when he invites us to dinner!!

Looking forward to Maeng's turkey and trimmings this evening. Our driver is supposed to be here at 3:00, which gives us plenty of time to get back to Bangkok for dinner.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas! I would love to send all of you some of the sunshine and warm temps we are having here. I think you would like it much better than snow!

Oh, did I mention the latest import to Thailand from the USA? This one is causing huge huge lines of people waiting to buy... amazing! Absolutely amazing. I saw the line a Paragon and could not believe what I was seeing. Thai people were standing in line (and some were being PAID to do it) to buy...... Krispy Kreme donuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Later...

Carol

Merry Christmas everyone. We made it back from Ban Bueng in plenty of time to relax before heading out to dinner at the PL. DH was reading the newspaper and I heard him say..."I KNEW it...!" I had no idea what he KNEW... but soon found out. He said he thought he felt something in his shoe (sneaker style) and when he took it off, he realized he had brought home a souvenir from Ban Bueng. He had a tiny little frog/toad in his shoe!!! It hopped around our apartment a little bit, no doubt relieved to be able to breath again!

DH caught the frog/toad and took it for show and tell at the PL. He then released it outside, in the back alley. He now believes in shaking your shoes and tipping them upside down before putting them on, after they have been sitting outside the door of the house over night! haha

'Our' table at PL tonight was DH and myself, DS Brad, dogster, mcbeanie (Sandra) and her DH, and Dr Jack. What a great group of people to spend the evening together, sharing stories from our various backgrounds. I hope the others enjoyed the evening as much as I did. The food was great. (thank you Maeng) Everyone in the bar was in a very festive mood tonight (with the exception of a French guy I'll let dogster tell about, should he want to). Santa came in with candy for the children, of which there were at least 6-8 with their parents. It was a wonderful family affair tonight.

When asked if we would be together again next year, same place, same time, the answer was "Why not!" from dogster. I hope Sandra and DH will also consider it again.

Now it's time to sleep!

Carol

Smeagol, there really nothing like Christmas in Bangkok. Highly, highly recommended.

And I can't think of a better way for an old dawg to spend Christmas dinner than with good-hearted Fodor's friends, new and old.

Bless us all, Tiny Tim.

'the comforts of old England...'

Isn't that an oxymoron these days?

Just leave him behind in the snow.

Smeagol, would LOVE to add two (or one, if Muffin stays home haha) chairs to the table at the PL. Dogster is absolutely right. There is nothing quite like Christmas in Bangkok. I hope you can work your magic and get it scheduled. I'm crossing my fingers for you.

Happy Christmas - to all on the Asia Board, and it sounds as if Carol et al had a warm and wonderful time with family and friends.Just love hearing about celebrating the season in Thailand.
Christmas Day here in Chicagoland was very snowy but lovely in it's own way. So nice to have our family together under one roof, all cozy and warm, with a nice fire going. The food was not bad either, however, I'm exhausted from non stop cooking from our breakfast/brunch to the blow out dinner followed by good old English Christmas Pudding, brought to the table in flames and us all wearing silly hats from when we pulled the English Christmas Crackers. Last night 9christmas Eve) we all went to the old Music Box Theatre in Chicago where they had the pipe organ and a choir and we all sang Christmas songs, followd by an audience participation showing of It's a Wonderful Life. So very nice.
Our Thai friends arrived at our home the night before Christmas Eve, bearing bags and bags of Thai dishes. As I had already prepared food for them, we chilled it all and had our own rendition of "A Christmas Story" remember the Chinese Restauraunt Christmas? but had re heated wonderful Thai Food on Christmas Eve.
OK, the family is now calling me for playing Trivial Persuit. Warm greetings to all.
Sue- (counting only 10 days 'till we leave for BKK)

Indeed, there is nothing like Christmas in Bangkok. I used to go at Christmas/New Years every year, but it's been a while since I did that. Warm wishes to all of you!

We just finished a really nice dinner at Red Sky (top of Centara Grande Hotel at Central World). The air was really fresh at 55 floors up, dining outside. The view is great, but not 360 degrees. Not as nice as Sky Bar, IMO. There is a wall that obstructs one side, and then the bar/bar stools on another side obstruct a bit. But other than that, the view was nice. Dogster, we waved at you down below, at Arnoma!

Via Vai is now open again, after finishing a renovation. They have increased the size of the outside dining area by at least 50%, and they call the new outside area White bar (or something like that); it's all painted white, and the furnishings are white too. I'll have more details of the renovation once we have been there to eat! It looks really nice though. Much more 'open' than before. Much easier to see inside the restaurant.

Paragon and MBK and Siam Square were all very crowded with shoppers today. A 'mad house' mostly. If you've not wandered into Siam Square, it is an interesting area for shopping... the latest 'hip' young Thai designers sell their wares there. The shoppers are pretty much all Thais, so not much there in western sizes; but prices are very reasonable.

Weather today was very pleasant! Plenty of sun, and not at all hot. Pure enjoyment!

Sandra, hope your massage was nice...

Exchange rate at VASU today is 30.08. Walk-ups are giving about 29.8, roughly. The rate is improving ever-so-slightly.

I made a run Victory Monument area this morning. There is a small mall attached to the BTS and it is about 99% Thai shoppers. Always an interesting look. Cheap bling/costume jewelry... 3 for 50 baht... Bob, I think prices are better than at Coco Banana at Platinum! But not nearly the variety. Platinum is getting too many falongs for there to be very many bargains there anymore. It was more fun before it was 'discovered' and talked about .... did I do that??? haha

Gorgeous weather again today. No complaints what so ever. Last night's dinner at Red Sky was what you would call chilly... and very breezy.

Wow, what a fabulous evening for dining outside! Nice breeze, perfect temps... we would NOT be doing this in Illinois right now. haha

We opted for the newly renovated Via Vai/White which was just comleted a couple of days ago. Very pleasant indeed. The decor at White is, indeed, white. White wicker tables (but with no leg room underneath, which we do not like) and chairs, and black place mats. It looks really fresh and nice now... wonder how it will hold up. It was busy tonight. Hope they do well. As you fodorites probably know, this is our fave pizza place.

Leaving early in the morning on a day trip to Chiang Mai, so may be off line for the next 24 hours or more. I'm not carrying the laptop along for just the day. Maeng is joining us. Jit will pick us up at the airport, and I assume we will follow a lot of our usual routing for a 1-day visit to the markets/frog factory. followed by dinner across from the airport, with our dear CM friend whom we've known, and done business with, for a number of years.

Sorry to hear that BOS and NYC might be caught up in a blizzard right now. Stay warm!

Carol, You left home just in time to miss the 5" of snow we got Christmas eve. I miss Maengs' chili, Lars' mystery punch and Jacks hospitality. Leny is bundled up and playing in the snow since this is her 2'nd winter here. I never thought on my 14'th trip to BKK I'd be meeting my future wife. Gary is leaving Chicago on Wednesday and will see you soon, he'll be in need of adult supervision. Enjoy the warm weather, talk to you soon.

Hi John... nice to see your post here. Hello to Leny... bundle up, stay warm. We'll try to keep Gary under control... haha. Sorry we'll miss Gene and Mary though.

Bob, I agree with your assessment of the gov't calling the weather a disaster. DH said the same thing, DS too. It's WINTER. You can expect snow and cold temps. Now get out there and shovel it!! (tongue in cheek)

Mango, you are right about Siam Square. I hope to get back there during this trip. Always interesting things. And when are you returning to BKK so we can meet at Haagen-Dazs??

We (DS, Maeng, me) went on our day-trip to Chiang Mai yesterday. DH stayed in BKK... he's not a shopper. We boarded the 7:50am Thai Airways 747 for CM.. full house. It amazes me that they can fill a 747 for a one-hour flight, but it happens all the time here.

We made our usual stop first at the frog factory so DS could place his order, which he then hoped to take on the plane, but it will be sent to BKK on Friday instead. No problem.

BoSang Market was a good stop for shopping yesterday. There is a 'new' tote bag style (obviously handmade, hand stitched) which comes in all sorts of interesting fabric patterns. Could not resist! I have lunch once a month with a small group of retired teachers and these gals will love the tote bags, I'm sure. They were about $4 each.

I got a few more handmade necklaces. Jewelry is always easy, and the selection at BoSang is usually unique. Some are fresh water pearls, for 110 baht!

Maeng cooked our lunch at an MK restaurant. We had vegetables in a soup pot, with some meat, eggs, glass noodles and tofu added. Also, shrimp, chicken, pork, spring rolls, duck, and 3 selections of dim sum. Needless to say, we were stuffed. All for about $30. I know, MK is a chain. Some don't like 'chain' restaurants, but this one is always very fresh and tasty... but you need someone like Maeng to cook for you...haha!!

We went to the local food market in the heart of the city, where Maeng always gets CM sausage and other specialties of the region. She always gets requests from patrons at the bar, and they literally wait for her to get back (last night) to serve up some of the stuff she buys. I hope she managed to stay awake long enough to prepare some of it.

She bought 1.3 kilos of fresh strawberries. They looked really nice. What I liked about it was they sell the strawberries to you in a handmade dried grass 'basket' with a handle. I LOVED that basket. They were all over the place at the fresh market. Someone makes those very simple baskets, and then sells them to someone else who takes them to the fresh market and sells them to the various vendors for containers for their produce. Such is capitalism...

We usually see our friend Tim in CM, but this time she was not available; this freed up a spot in our day, so we stopped very near to the local fresh market for a walk around the food and craft stalls along the street. Very different from the CM night market!! I found a lady making crocheted hats (winter ones) and bought 5 of them for 110 baht each. They will be very warm head gear for a handful of friends back home. Very well made, for about $3.60 each.

We had time to stop around the night market for about an hour. I have a friend at home who collects all things Pepsi. I think Janet will really like the purse I got for her, made out of Thai Pepsi cans. Not the usual flimsy ones... this one can actually be used! Can't wait to surprise her with it. Maeng thought I paid too much, at 400 baht, but I thought it was worth it. The workmanship was exceptional. Should have bought more than one...

We had dinner at a nice restaurant near the airport; not the usual one we go to before flying back to BKK, but another one, that sits back from the airport road, and is on a small 'lake' in a condo development area. We were not very hungry, but it was pleasant to sit outside (many Thais were dressed in heavy sweaters) and although it was a bit cooler than we usually find the temps to be in CM, it wasn't COLD. CNN is reporting on weather around the globe and talking about the 'disaster area' in northern Thailand... the gov't is helping people buy winter coats to keep warm.... (they should be in Illinois about now!!!)...

Back to BKK at 9pm on a 777 that was filled to capacity. I like the 3-3-3 seating arrangement on Thai. Very comfortable. We all slept during the one-hour flight.

We went upstairs to arrivals at BKK airport after collecting our bags, and grabbed a taxi that was dropping people off. First stop, soi 8. Then soi 4, then the PL.

It was a fun day in Chiang Mai. I'll do it again come April!

Today, no plans other than having dinner with friends at INDIGO tonight. I look forward to trying this place. DS and DH and a number of DS's friends really like this place, so I'm anxious to get the chance to form my own opinion. It is French... hanuman have you tried it?

Sandra, Richard, hope you made it home safe and sound. Sorry you could not stay in BKK long enough to go to Platinum with me! Next time.

It's about 11pm here in BKK. We've just returned from dinner at Indigo. You will want to put this restaurant on your list of must-do's for the next time you are in Bangkok, if you like French food.

The food for 5 adults (including two bottles of wine @ 1000bt each, and port after dinner) was under 10,000 baht. I had a capaccio of beef with rocket salad and a tomato ravioli. Both items were on the 'starters' menu, but it was plenty of food for me. DH had a filet, DS had duck, friends had veal and pork. Everyone's food was very very tasty. No one was wishing they had ordered something different.

The atmosphere here is very nice... it is yet another restaurant in a house. Dining inside and outside, all very nice. A good place to dine and have a conversation... not at all loud. The staff was very attentive and were pouring wine and making sure that water glasses were full. All dishes were served to everyone at the table at the same time, so no one was left waiting while others stared at their food, wanting to take a bite. I can see why DH and DS like this place so much.

Indigo is located close to Sala Daeng BTS station. Exit the staion and go to Soi Convent (did not catch which exit number that is). Walk down Soi Convent to Molly Malloy's, which is on the left side of the soi. Directly across from Molly Malloy's is a very small soi (barely room for a car) and Indigo is at the end of that soi, but a very short walk from Molly Malloy's, and is on the right side of the soi.

Well worth the trouble to get there!! Thumbs up for Indigo.

And now, sleep!
