You're probably right on them having the SSN somewhere, but I won't place it on another form. I don't want to make it too easy for others to see.
Placing it on the passport form, for me, was worth the risk, because I wanted the passport; I'm indifferent to having global entry. I don't recall the passport form asking for it, as that was many years ago, but I'll defer to your knowledge.
Still "no" to the fingerprints. You're quite right on it being a "tradeoff". It's for some, but not others.
Fortunately, it hasn't been too long of a wait for me, and it helps that I rarely have a connection to be concerned about.
