Upgrade for Fee at Gate: Which Airlines?

I recently flew to Leipzig on Lufthansa returning via Austrian Airlines. Austrian Airlines allowed on on board upgrade to business class once the flight had closed at a cost of 590,00€. Lufthansa did not offer the opportunity to upgrade. Does anyone know of any other airline that offers upgrades at the gate or on board for a fee? Thanks! Flyer-

United offered the chance to upgrade from economy to business at check-in for a Chicago-Amsterdam flight last week. I think it was either $500 or $550 (I did not accept). There was no offer on the return today--flight was full.

I've seen upgrade offers at usair.com when using online checkin. Also United at the easy chicken kiosk.

Delta wants $100 on a short 30-minute SLC-BOI flight I was on. The whole plane was pretty empty. I didn't do it.

Would this be an option with ff award travel? Say empty business seats on a UA trans-atlantic flight. I assume no, but have never flown international on UA.

United offered upgrades at the airport for $50 on a flight from Myrtle Beach to Chicago.
Lan offered upgrades for $100 at the airport on a flight from Santiago to Easter Island. On the Easter Island flight, my husband and I declined but were upgraded anyway when we were about to board!

I'd love to upgrade on my flight tomorrow night from ORD to LHR on UA. I'll have to see what price they offer. I sleep much better in a business class seat than I do in economy... although my economy seat is in a pretty good location. I do not sleep well sitting up... and let's face it. Economy seating is sitting UP, NOT reclined!! Something to think about (depending on price).

I use miles all the time to upgrade on UA flights to BKK. But the economy ticket costs me an extra $500 or so, to be able to do the upgrade. But that's a round-trip price. $500 for one way... hmmm... We'll see! Can't spend all my money on the flight over, when I need it to shop at Harrods LHR during my layover enroute to ZRH! The LHR-ZRH flight is a short hop so almost any seat will do on that one.

The USAir (HP) upgrade is $50 for a short haul (LAX-LAS, for example).

Thanks everyone. I'd happily fly one airline over another to know I have this option.

One airline I know that definitely does not have such program is Continental. So, you can count it off for your travel.

I haven't flown 'em recently, so don't know if they still do it, but Aeromexico used to offer $50 upgrades at checkin.

Have fun!

We recently flew USAirways back from Denver through Charlotte. On the way to the airport I called to see if we could upgrade. They said that I was not elligible to pay for an upgrade because my ticket was using FF miles, even though we bought my wife's ticket. However, at the gate, they were announcing the upgrades, and I inquired. The gate agent said it would be no problem at all, so we paid $150 apiece to upgrade. The coach section was full so we thought it was well worth it!
