two seperate flights to hawaii

Hello,
Pricing out our march trip to kauai showed I can fly chicago to lax, then lax to kaui on hawaii airlines for 150 cheaper than booking direct from chicago. We are a family of 6 which really adds up, wondering if theres anyway to avoid collecting numerous bags, hauliung them to hawaaian air, recheckin etc.
with kids in tow.
Thanks for any advice,
Susan

You shouldn't have to recheck your bags, as most major airlines have interline baggage agreement. And you should be able to do web check-in for Hawaiian before you leave home.

Just make sure you give yourself a very comfortable transit time, as if the first flight was delayed and you couldn't make the connection, you're likely to have to buy new tickets (at very high cost) for the subsequent flight.

You will have to check-in for your first flight from Chicago to LAX and pick up your luggage in LAX. Then check-in again in LAX for the flight to Kaui since you are flying on two separate tickets/reservations. As mentioned before, make sure you give enought time between the two flights just in case the flight from Chicago to LAX is delayed. If you miss the second flight there will be no compensation since you are traveling on two separate tickets. A good idea is to fly the day before to LAX and make the flight to Kaui the next day. There is plenty of budget hotels around LAX. You will end up spending some extra money, but saving $150 per ticket is worth the extra travel accomodations.

You can still check bags through to the final destination.
