Small planes from LAX to San Diego one way
Any planes besides the major airlines that fly between LAX and San Diego one way.
We need it to catch a cruise boat going from Ensenada or even better is there a small plane that flies between San Diego and Ensenada or even Tijuana which would work for us.

No there are no discount airlines between Los Angeles and San Diego. I know that the price is well over $100 per person one-way between the two airports. Mexicana has service from LAX to Tijuana airport, but a very limited schedule. You are probably better off renting a car one way to San Diego and then walk across to Tijuana and then you can take a bus to Ensenada from the bus terminal at the border which run every 30 minutes. Thanks for your help. Just looking at the train from LA to San Diego would be the cheapest and best way if we do not drive to San Diego. How close is the train station to the bus station?

Yes, Amtrak is also a good option. Amtrak will leave you in downtown San Diego which is 15 miles from the border. You can get on the San Diego Trolley(next to the train station) for the rest of the trip to the US/Mexico border. It is safe and convenient. You will get off at the last stop, San Ysidro port of entry and from there it is only a 15 minute walk to the border bus station in Tijuana. I have taken the bus to Ensenada before and it is fine. It costs about $8 per person and it takes about one hour and fifteen minutes. I hope this helps.

Just curious, but when I think of people going on a cruise, I see people with lots of luggage.
This LAX-SAN-Trolley-walk-bus thing may be very doable wihout luggage, but it doesn't seem all that practical with 2-3 big pieces of luggage.
Isn't there a bus company that does these type of transfers for cruise lines?
The OP should call the cruise line or a local travel agent that specializes in cruises and I'm sure they will hook them up with a very easy, convinient transfer option from LAX to Ensenada.

The cruise is on Celebrity, Infinity-not until April. The only hitch I see after reading the last email is this doable with the luggage after getting off the trolley? Are there taxis that would take you to the bus station? Sure if the cruise ship provided your airfare also they would provide transpo,but we are coming in on different airlines at different times. So that would mean we would have to make our own arrangements.

According to Celebrity Cruises wbsite, you are still welcome to buy transfers from the airport to the ship regardless if you arranged the flights with them.
Call your TA and ask. It would make the transfer so much easier. I read somewhere that RCI offers the bus ride for ~$75. Probably worth every penny when you consider the distance and not having to deal with luggage. RCI is the parent company of Celebrity so I'm sure Celebrity offers the same kind of a deal.

The walk from the Trolley to the bus station is about half a mile and it requires having to cross a pedestrian bridge(via a ramp) to the Mexico exit. I you only have a bag and a wheeled suitcase I do not see a problem since there are no stairs to climb. There are no taxis that will take you across the border. One more option from San Diego is going with Contact Tours which offer tours to Ensenada from San Diego. I know they will take you there from San Diego all the way to Ensenada for $60 one way. Thanks again for all the help. It does not sound that bad with the luggage as each of us will have a suitcase that will roll.
We are going a few days before the cruise to Ensenada so that is why I think we may not be able to do it with the cruise ship transpo as was suggested.

Try this:
I know Greyhound will get you from LA to Tijuana Central Bus station for around $20 per, one way.
They work with their Mexican counterpart, so it may be possible to buy a ticket to your final destination from Greyhound and if not I'm sure you could just buy the second ticket yourself at the station.
The ride from LA to Tijuana is a non-stop that is scheduled for 4 hours. (I think some part of that is the border crossing formalities).
Call Greyhound and talk to their reservation desk.

From the East coast it is $150.0 more to fly into San Diego than LAX, Also my friend is flying from Asia into LAX so that is another reason for the LAX flight. Just not sure at this time which one I will fly into,but also I am getting info for my traveling partner as well as for myself.

We have cruised on Celebrity <i>into</i> Ensenada and have to second the idea of taking one of the cruiseline's transfer buses. Notwithstanding the border business (for us, coming into the US from Mexico, it was a phenomenal bit of fubar) - the pier in Ensenada is a long way from the middle of things, so your baggage schlepping won't be limited to trains, trolly, border posts or buses entering Mexico, but also in Ensenada itself.
Some Aussie friends we met on the ship wanted to spend some time in Mexico so they offloaded themselves and (eventually) made their way to LA. They wrote to us later and said it was more expense and hassle to do it "independently" than it would have been to go with the (overpriced, yeah) cruise line connections.
Note that Celebrity also has transfers from LAX that aren't a lot more than the SD airport charters, so that might be an alternative worth looking into.
Go to the Celebrity board at Cruisecritic.com - you may get lots more (and more recent) pointers there.

Back to the question especially for Degarr. Had not checked this post recently.
My friend will have a rental car so we will drive to San Diego from Lax. Checked on flights which are expensive. I called Grey hound Buses and they have a bus that will go from San Diego(we will be there 2 days) to Tijuana-1 hour- $5. Then catch a Mexican bus which run every 30 minutes down to Ensenada. We will be in Ensenada for 2 days before the cruise.
Maybe we will meet up on the cruise. Sure we will find some way to get there even if this plan doesn't work out.

Make sure you take the bus that leaves from downtown San Diego Greyhound terminal to Tijuana. It will be very convenient to do it that way. You will be dropped off at the Tijuana terminal and yes buses to Ensenada leave every 30 minutes.

Thanks again as we want to get to the right place. Where in San Diego would be a good place to stay in an area nearby? Is it near the old part of San Diego? I have only been to San Diego 1 time when my daughter lived thee about 10 years ago so I am looking forward to seeing it again.

If I'm not mistaken, the Greyhound station is on Broadway just west of the Gaslamp district. And I'd stay there. There are several good hotels in the Gaslamp, and a lot of fun things to do. I did an overnight business trip there and can recommend an excellent restaurant called Dobson's. I stayed at the US Grant, which I hesitate to recommend; the public areas of this old hotel are glorious (absolutely beautiful), but the elderly plumbing and slightly worn room furnishings keep me from giving it a full thumbs-up. I don't have personal experience in SD otherwise, as I usually stay with friends up in Balboa Park or Hillcrest or over in Little Italy. Anyone else with hotel recos in the Gaslamp?
