No, the "color" of your credit card has nothing to do with your Frequent Flyer "status" with the airline. Assuming you are a member of your airline's Frequent Flyer program) you can only earn platinum status (or any other level) with the airline by actually purchasing tickets and flying.
I assume you are asking about the American Airlines AAdvantage Card/Frequent Flyer Program. If so, you have to fly 25,000 or 30 segments in a year to reach "Gold" status and 50,000 miles or 60 segments to reach Platinum status.

No - the Citibank /AA platinum select credit card is NOT the same as American Airlines platinum elite status.
But I believe Citi is offering a 2-fer companion ticket for first time Citi-AA credit card members if that interests you. Note that it takes 8 to 10 weeks to arrive.

There is one "exception" to the above statements that credit card miles don't count as "real" miles for platinum status. I achieved last year 2 million miles by a combination of flight miles and credit card spending and received status as "platinum for life" the same as if I had flown all those miles.

That's right - and 1 million miles, acquired by any means, gives you AA Gold status for life - enough to get baggage fees waived, or the ability to pick exit-row seats at booking, etc.
