Just flew Vueling Airlines in Spain

My carry on bag weighed 10.5 kilos instead of the allowed 10 kilo. They wanted to charge me 35 Euros to check it. I had a fit. They finally checked it but didn´t charge me. Instead of arriving in Barcelona at 12:40 a.m., the plain arrived at 3:15 a.m. I would recommend that when you check in with Vueling, don´t bring your carry on bag with you to the check in counter. Instead, have a friend watch it and take turns checking in.

Next time weigh your stuff. Since they survive by charging extra fees, discount airlines are pretty strict about weight limits. Their website even says as much:

Remember... the rules at the boarding gate are strict. If your luggage exceeds the size and weight allowance, you'll have to check in your luggage at the higher cost of 35€ per bag and journey.

Still, I don't see why you are complaining since your bag was checked for free instead of the 35€ they should have charged you.

Wally's not complaining ... he's informing us.

Informing of stuff that is explicitly on the airline's page?

Sure! ...why not? We have highway signs saying "stop ahead" when the stop sign is explicitly obvious. Sometimes additional heads-up are appreciated.

What about stop ahead sign ahead before the stop ahead sign, which is before the stop sign?

<g> i haven't seen that but I have seen two, sometimes three, advance warnings of speed limit reductions. Eg Waldo, FL. Unfortunately, they still catch speeders who ignore the warnings.

(home at last) I can add that one week earlier, I flew from Barcelona to Alicante with Vueling and never had any of these problems. The check-in staff at Barcelona were wonderful. However, at Alicante, the check-in staff were very rude. Sparkchaser, my crystal ball is showing that you are going to get a speeding ticket today for going 25.5 in a 25 speed limit area.

We're flying an Iberia airlines flight "operated by Vueling" -- from BCN to Florence next year. Have never flown either one so hoping it's more like Wally's flight out of Barcelona.

I should add that the airline is pronounced Welling, not Vueling. They also said on the return flight that my carry on bag was too large. When I purchased the bag it said that it was an approved carry on bag.

You think they were rude because they tried to enforce a rule that you didn't like but had, in effect, already agreed to. They were rude because the said "no". And, of course, you weren't rude when you pitched a fit, and you thanked them when they bent the rule.

If you purchased that bag from Veuling or had a tag saying "Veuling-approved carry-on" then you have a case to complain about their comment about your bag. But apparently they bent the rules again for you, so maybe that was a compliment and not a complaint.

Also apparent is that they must have been quick to turn off the fasten-seatbelt sign or we would have heard about.

Good to hear that you had a good trip on Veuling and that they were able to accommodate your wishes/wants/needs by being flexible.

I did look her in the eyes, smiled, and said thank you.

By the way, they turned on the boarding sign at mid night and the plane arrived at the airport for boarding at 1:45 am. After standing for 30 minutes, most of us figured that out and sat back down.

Flew Vueling BCN-ORY today. Cattle car loading by pleasant attendants. Niece's roll aboard was about an inch over the size limit but no one stopped her and it fit in the overhead without problem. Cramped seating. Food and beverage for purchase on board. Ran close to on time. Luggage delivered pretty rapidly. All in all, your basic discount airline. Would use again for a short hop.

Do note that BCN is set up in such a way that it can be a hike to your actual departure gate so need to allow sufficient time.

Hi, I am looking at flights from Barcelona to Madrid in May. Though Vueling is not booking for that period yet, I can get tickets on Air Europa, though they are more expensive, even after adding in the fees for 2 checked in bags. The other two bags (the guy's) would be carry-ons but after reading how strict they are etc, I am wondering if it might be better to go with the Air Europa option. Also because on their current schedule, I am not seeing Vueling flights around 11am or noon, which would be preferred.
Should I wait until their schedule is released for May? Does anyone know how low the fare can be for Barcelona-Madrid?
Does their limit of 10 kgs include my pocketbook as well?
Thanks!

Haven't flown this airline, but if they are like Ryan Air you are allowed one carry-on. Period. No purse, unless that is your only carry-on. I've even heard tell that a book carried in hand is not allowed, if you can't fit it into your carry-on baggage. Everything must fit into the carry-on, except for a coat. Depends on the flight and the crew, I suppose. I've seen folks get away with big purses in addition to oversize bags, but don't count on it, it could cost you. Hey, if I can fly someplace for 25-50€ I'll put up with it.

They do allow a small carry on bag and a suitcase. The suitcase can only weight 10 kilos which is almost how much an empty suitcase weighs.

My main reason to not check a bag was because I was planning to spend the night inside the Barcelona airport after the flight arrived from Alicante. Since I checked the bag, I had to leave the secured area of the airport to retrieve the bag. There are much better places to sleep and relax inside the secured area of the airport.

Since my flight from Alicante was three hours late and didn't arrive in Barcelona until around 3:30 a.m., I was able to check in with my next flight and relax in the lounge when it opened at 5:00 a.m.

Yes harriet_hughes, I had a bad experience witb Ryan Air from Londo to Thessoloniki where I had emptied a lot of stuff from my carry-on before I left for the airport to make sure it was under the allowance. Unfortunately, I did not know they would weigh my handbag along with my carry-on! This was done at a checkpoint soon before the gate so I did not have time to do anything except pay 40 pounds. I was so mad at myself for deciding not to check in a bag.
That's why I want to make sure this time. Per Air Europa's website, one check-in bag is free, though I am not sure if that applies to short-haul flights as well.

Barcelona to Madrid is much easier and more comfortable on the train, less time consuming as there is no check in and security to clear, probably cheaper as well. The AVE high speed train takes about 2.5 hours. Schedule for May will likely not be available yet, will be posted 60-90 days ahead.

Thanks Seamus, I thought I had checked on the RENFe website for Sept/Oct & the train was more expensive. (85 euros v/s 40 for Vueling) Of course, these are just random dates since the May rates are not online yet. If train is cheaper or almost the same, we will definitely go with the train option. At least I will not be stressed over being .5kg overweight on the luggage!
