JFK customs and change of airline

Hi - we are arriving on an Aeroflot flight to terminal 1 at JFK and going on to our destination on a Delta flight from terminal 3. If we check our luggage in all the way to the final destination, how does it work after we go through customs? Do we need to take our luggage from terminal 1 to a Delta checkin counter? Our travel agent says that somehow,"the airlines will take care" of getting the luggage over to Delta after we clear customes and that we just need to go over to terminal 3 ourselves. Does anyone have details?
Thanks

If your bags are tagged through to your final destination, then there should be a counter after you exit customs to redeposit your bags there for various airlines. Or you can haul them over to DL yourselves.

It seems to me all customs areas in US airports (at least in the major cities) have a place to re-deposit your bags right after customs.

I have been in Terminal 1 and they do have a counter to transfer luggage. Look for the sign that says "Transfers" and they will take your luggage at the counter as long as your luggage is checked into your final destination.
