Going on a cruise, flying to get to the port, but cruising back to home city??? Expect a giant hassle. It's one of the flags that airport security looks for. They ripped all my stuff apart, went thru every pocket, gave DH an especially third degree, etc. Even if you (or both) have or had a 'top secret' clearance, does it make a difference, NOT!!. I am fully in favor of creating a database that excludes people with perfect records of long standing from being hassled at airports. With all this misplaced scrutiny, other, more dangerous people are getting thru! Comments, enyone.

You must have had especially bad luck. My husband flies on one-way tickets all the time - or itineraries that look like one way to airline. Son also flies one-way to or from Savannah several times/year as does one of us (car pick up/delivery). I know it is one of the security alerts, but none of us had the the degree of hassle you did.

Had many one way tickets - nothing
Had a cash ticket to Thailand - nothing
Had a very normal R/T ticket to Chicago, paid with a CC, and got SSSSed in TPA, my homeport, an airport that I fly out of about 12 times a year.
No rhyme or reason. The AA TA offered to take the SSSS off the BP, but I was running late and I told her to forget it. She said it would take some time on the computer. Actually it worked in my favor as the regular queue was very loooong and the special line did not have anybody....
I was through in just few minutes and even had time to get a quick drink at the bar.
TSA is a disaster waiting to happen and the agency should be dissolved, but at the end of the day I don't sweat the small stuff.
Reporting from Warsaw, Poland. Heading down to Cracow tomorrow morning.

Why one-way? Drive with son in car 1000 miles then fly home. Husband flies to one city on business, rents car, drives to another city for meeting, returns car, flies home from there.
OP - why would you think that a government entity would be able to create an accurate list of "safe" fliers when they can not create an accurate list of unsafe fliers - as evidenced by those who end up in error on some extra scrutiny list.
Are you sure DH is not a terrorist or secret agent? Would make a great movie!

Lots of flags including mileage upgrades but I know I'll always get pulled aside so I just plan on it. The screener in Boston was at least pleasant when I went through there on my way to London. She bellowed out to me, "Looks like you're Queen for a Day, so step over here."

I flew Southwest one-way in September, San Francisco to Chicago. Came early ready for a strip-search. Nobody batted an eyelash. Was bored in the boarding area.
Took Amtrak back.
Maybe, Clara, it was an international flight for you? They check thoroughly there.

One time when we were flying BA to London the let my DH board, then signaled me to 'step aside'. They took my handbag, moved it to a table several feet away, turned their back to me, and proceeded to rifle thru my stuff...I felt funny, and wondered if they were 'palming my money', jewelry, and all the other stuff I didn't want out of my sight..I guess it was a 'number game' but didn't understand why I couldn't at least watch while their prowled around in my personal stuff. Just don't understand what the logic is in all that. Oh well..I was only delayed a few moments, but I ask you, "do I look like a terrorist". ha!!! I don't see how we can avoide sterotyping to a certain degree...after all, if four blue haired granies held up a 7/11, who would be the first kinda people you'd look for?
