beth.....Genertally speaking....if you buy a non refundable ticket and if its cheap, "a deal", then it is non refundable,it is just that---you wont get a refund.IMHO, the most important thing to remember about this type of ticket is that in order NOT to lose its entire value, it must be cancelled prior to the scheduled departure date.If you dont cancel, it is totally gone.Again, generally speaking, if it is non refundable,the airlines will charge a fee to have it reissued for future use...again, usually $100.....Some of the discount carriers charge lee, like $50 or even $25, and Southwest does not charge any fee to rebook.But in most cases, gotta cancel ahead of the scheduled departure date..I hope this helps...
