SO and I are going to London later this year, we are booked on two separate tickets on BA, my is a free ticket, his a paid ticket. What is the best way to get two seats together?

a. contact BA and try to get the PNR's linked - it won't immediately get you seats together, but is generally a good idea especially when there are disruptions.

b. 24hrs before the flight checkin and select adjacent seats. You can open 2 different browsers or login from 2 different computers to pick adjacent seats at exactly the same time.

c. pay $15 and get seat assignments now.

Question about linking the PNRs -- do all airlines do this upon request? I have tried to get UA to do it several times and they say there is not a way for them to do it. Am I asking the wrong question, link 2 PNRs is what I ask.

They can't put two separate reservations into same PNR, but they can cross-reference them. No guarantee that will mean two seats together, but at least the other person's PNR will show internally to an airline's agent.

yestravel, what I ask United to do on occasion is "put a notation" in the PNRs, when we are traveling on separate records. It won't guarantee that the reservations are handled together if there are schedule changes or seated together, but at least the agent looking at one will see the notation for the other (as rkkwan says).

Thank you -- yes, WA does "put a notation" in the PNRs that we are together. When aircraft is changed thus affecting seating, the notation doesn't help. We are not seated together. (I assume this is done by a cmputer.) Fortunately I haven't had a cancellation or rebooking by the airlines to know if it would help in that type of situation.

Notations in bookings are often not seen at airport check-in. It's one thing to have the notation in the PNR and another to get that notation to show up when checking in. The suggestion of booking seats 24hrs in advance on 2 computers or browsers and pick adjacent seats is the best option. Leaving seat assignment until getting to the airport is not advisable esp if the flight is busy or oversold.

You might find that on BA, when you go to do the online check in, that they have assigned seats already so only one of the bookings might need to be changed to be next to the other one.
