Fuel Fees

Once you pay for a ticket, can the airline hit you when you check in with additional fees for fuel surcharges?

I've never heard of this and I don't see how it's possible.

In general no. However, I've heard of tour companies having a clause in their terms and conditions that allow them to charge you extra if the airline raise additional fees/surcharges.

Not a paid ticket, but on the NW website it says the following for awards on Malaysian:

***WorldPerks members traveling on award tickets on Malaysia Airlines are subject to additional fees that include administrative fees, insurance and fuel surcharges. These fees will be collected by Malaysia Airlines upon check-in.

The only way they can do it is if they included the conditions in the fare rules. If they did, then it's no excuse that you didn't know about it. If they didn't then you are fine....

We pretty much became our own travel agents in the last few years, but many of us don't want to take the responsibility. If you are purchasing a fare, ask yourself the following questions and make sure you read the fare rules:

1. Do I earn miles
2. Can I upgrade from that fare using whatever upgrade instrument....
3. what if any additional charges are added, or are allowed to be added later.
4. Can I be hit with additional charges

etc.etc.

Point is, if you want to be your own TA then act like one, and check all the crossed tees and dotted Is....

Don't just do a simple "purchase" click and the complain that you thought differently, and the airline is not fair. Read the rules, understand the rules, live by the rules....if you can't, then hire a competent TA, explain exactly what you want, and pay for the service.
