FF Booking - Do you book family members not using miles at the same time?

We would like to use some miles next year for a trip to Greece or Morocco. We will try to use United miles to a convenient gateway and then take an inexpensive flight to our final destination. We are a family of four with two children but we only have enough miles for two tickets at this point. Do I have to book and pay for the other tickets when I book awards tickts? I hate to have to pay a really high fare for the other two tickets if they are less expensive at another time. Any advice? Thanks.

You don't have to book the other fares right now. Just wait until you find the fare you like - but of course you're taking a risk. Small one if you're not traveling until next year.

UA doesn't charge for changing dates on the same itinerary when using Mileage Plus FF points, so you can even change yours later on.

I'd think the risk would be that you wouldn't be able to book all on the same flight or, at the very least, get seats together.

I frequently book an award ticket first and then wait a while until I see a good price to book the accompanying paid ticket. Unless your children are also Frequent Flyer members, use your miles to book their tickets, and that way you and your spouse can earn more miles toward the trip.

Thanks for your suggestions. Maybe just to be safe I may book one of us with one child with miles and then wait on the paid fares.
